October 2022 News

On October 6th we welcomed four new additions to our "farmily"! Moms, Peggy and Clover, gave birth to two sets of twin lambs - two females and two males. All are healthy and doing well so far! This Navajo Churro heritage breed is particularly hardy and independent. At City Farm, our flock is used as a regenerative farming strategy to manage healthy pastures in rotational grazing and cover cropping. The sheep are also a great teaching tool as students in our youth programs learn about animal husbandry.

Farm Field Trips are back!

We have been having fun sharing the farm with inquisitive 3rd graders as they learn about pollinators and the importance of pollination. The students dissected flowers and used magnifying glasses to better understand each part of a flower. The 3rd graders planted their own seeds into our food forest, identified “good bugs” on a farm compared to “bad bugs,” and learned about why certain pollinators prefer specific shapes and colors of flowers.

We still have a couple field trip spots available, register today for 2022-2023 Farm Field Trips!

FARM HAPPENINGS

Construction of our Garden for All is underway! This fully accessible garden is the first step of a larger effort to increase universal accessibility farm-wide.

PS - Thanks to your support, we have raised 75% of our $20,000 goal to build the garden! Visit our website to learn more about supporting the project.

Event Postponement

NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

We’re switching to new crops for Winter!

Summertime is wrapping up, and we are transitioning into winter crops. We started arugula, pea shoots, turnips, and radishes, spinach, and other leafy green mixes. We’ll be adding these crops for sale on Harestly as they become available! For the home gardener, the end of summer doesn’t have to be mean the end of gardening. There are many crops that can thrive through our mild winter including baby arugula, spinach, mixed greens, and anything in the brassica genus: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and brussel sprouts.

FACES OF CITY FARM SLO

Joseph Dominguez,

Volunteer Programs Coordinator

Joseph was born and raised in Santa Maria and pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science with minors in Sustainable Agriculture and Spanish. During his undergraduate studies he developed an interest in regenerative agriculture and the interconnection of agriculture, environment, and education. After teaching English in Spain, helping with a horticultural therapy program in Hawaii, serving with the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and working on a Biodynamic Farm and Waldorf School in Washington, he returned home on the Central Coast to complete a master’s program in Higher Education Counseling and Student Affairs. We are fortunate to have Joseph on our team at City Farm SLO!
