Overview

Juneteenth may have become a federal holiday in 2021, but Historic Germantown has been celebrating the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States for 16 years now.

The annual (and free!) festival is hosted by the Johnson House Historic Site, a former stop along the Underground Railroad. During the event, the entire 6300 block of Germantown Avenue is filled with music, children’s activities, food trucks and historical re-enactments.

In 2022, the Juneteenth Festival takes place on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from 12 to 6 p.m.

Don’t Miss

Each June, Juneteenth celebrations across the country mark the anniversary of African Americans’ emancipation from enslavement and honor the ratification of the 13th Amendment while also examining the impact that slavery continues to have on America today.

During the annual Juneteenth Festival in Historic Germantown, guests can explore the history, heritage and culture of the neighborhood, as well as the area’s historic sites.
