Our ever growing family is made up of 13 Sheep, 9 Horses, 16 Pigs, 14 Goats, 2 Cows, 3 Turkeys, 7 Waterfowl, 43 Chickens, 17 Rabbits, 1 Llama and 1 Alpaca. Each has a name and a special story and we will share them with you in our newsletters.

BECOME A PATREON MEMBER!

Meet a few of our family members

This is Tucker. Tucker is a Quarter Horse, Paint Gelding.  He is super sensitive and relates well to people with special needs. Tucker's left eye is smaller than the other due to an injury as a youngster. He also struggles with "cribbing" which is brought on by boredom and lack of stimulation. Tucker is now provided with plenty of fun activities to keep him fulfilled and happy. He enjoys playing with his friends, especially Pancho, a miniature donkey. He loves windy days and has been seen to let out the occasional buck!

MEET MORE OF OUR FAMILY MEMBERS!

This is Cinder Red. Cinder is a miniature donkey. He was rescued as a youngster along with his best friend, Pancho.  Most people unfairly think that donkeys are stubborn and not intelligent but in fact they have a heightened sense of curiosity and make decisions independently for their safety. They can remember good and bad experiences for a long time. Negative or painful experiences affect the donkey's behavior, sometimes for years. Fortunately, most of Cinder's life has been nothing but positive. This very sweet boy enjoys being around people and is open to hugs and cuddles. He reminds us to be goofy, play and enjoy life. We will continue to love and care for him as miniature donkeys can live for around 25-35 years.

Volunteer Spotlight

Kelly

Assistant Animal Care Manager,

and Weekly Volunteer

Kelly started visiting the sanctuary in 2014. One day she came to the sanctuary with her partner to help heal a baby male dairy cow that was just rescued. It was Norman!

She would snuggle with Norman and noticed how loving and sweet he was. That was the spark that set off her volunteering journey at HFS in 2017.

This superstar is a leadership coach and consultant by day but finds time to wear many volunteer hats at HFS. She is not only our Assistant Animal Care Manager but also feeds and cares for the animals several times a week.

When Kelly arrives at HFS for her volunteer shifts she likes to check in with the chickens to see how their day is going. She then cruises through the barn to say hi and let herself feel all the happiness of just being with  her animal friends.

She tells us her favorite thing about being at the sanctuary is the overall love she feels for all these unique beings. She gets to be around them many times a week and helping them feels very fulfilling.

She is such a gift to the animals and the volunteers she works with.

As the Assistant Animal Care Manager her primary goal is to ensure we are caring for the animals regardless of size, shape or personality the best we can.  She also wants to expose more people to the plight of farmed animals through increased intimacy between the animals and the humans who come here.

Thank you, Kelly! We all appreciate everything you do for the residents of HFS.

"COMPASSION IS THE BEST SIDE EFFECT OF BEING VEGAN"

VOLUNTEER WITH US!

Vegan for the Animals

Approximately 70 billion animals are farmed for food around the world every year. Around two-thirds, almost 50 million, are raised in intensive factory farms. In the US, 99% of meat, dairy, and eggs come from factory farms. This kind of animal agriculture prioritizes profit above everything else. Animals live in cramped conditions (pens, crates or cages) and lack access to important natural behaviors such as nesting, foraging and play. Most are taken away from their mother within 24 hours. Crowded animals frequently inflict injuries on each other out of stress and frustration. Excessive weight gain is commonplace along with mutilation of beaks, ears, tails, horns and even live shredding. Lives are cut short as most animals sent to slaughter average 3-6 months of age.  Learn how you can do your part to put an end to this suffering by clicking the button below.
