Latest News

On September 2, 2022, we had our first School Supply and Backpack drive. We were able to help 271 children get ready to go back to school with backpacks and supplies. We could not have done it without the help of our volunteers and donors: Centennial High School Key Club, Gresham United Methodist Church, Good News Community Health Center, Gresham Toyota, Esther Velazquez, Craft Warehouse, GUMM, and family and friends. We are very grateful for every contribution. We hope to continue holding this drive every year to help the children and teens in the community.

New Furnace and Air Condition in the

North Room

The Rockwood Center replaced a Montgomery Wards furnace in the North Room that was likely original to the building. Thanks to generous donations and budget support, we were able to replace the 45-50 year old furnace and add air conditioning. We will save money on heating bills immediately, and we will be able to utilize the space throughout the summer.

Teddy Bear Parade

The Rockwood Center was excited to participate in the Gresham City Teddy Bear Parade for the first time. We saw many supporters, students and friends along the parade route. It was a blessing to see how many people are connecting to the Rockwood Center.

Music & Art Academy

With the OHA grant of $13,000.00, we hired nine high school students with excellent backgrounds in music and art. We started the Art & Music academy in July and August. We offered two weeks of Music classes, two weeks of art classes, and four Saturdays of music classes in October. Fifty children participated, learning basic music theory which they put it into practice with the Ukulele, Keyboard, Snare Drums, and Vocal.

Watch for posts on Facebook, Instagram, and on our Website when new classes begin.

WeSew Classes

Sewing classes are held on the first three Saturdays of each month

We have had about 50+ ladies participate in sewing classes, and Leticia has been busy teaching them. Beginning students learn how to use the sewing machine and understand the basic concepts of sewing: Stitching, Back Stitching, Bias cuts, and much more. They put their learning into projects like potholders, aprons, quilting, and hand towels.

Advanced students learn sewing a dart, seam allowances, hems and using and adapting patterns, and embroidering skirts and shirts. Pajama making and dressmaking classes will begin in November.

The dates and times for classes are posted on our website at www.therockwoodcenter.com.

Collage Art

We had a great time working alongside Rosamaria Rosales. We had 25 kids participate in Collage art class. They had fun creating Art using: Cardboard, thread, glue, paint, strings, and much more.  We are working together to start Adult Collage Art Classes.

The times and dates are still pending.
