May 14 Monthly Meeting: The monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. in our workshop at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) store located at 2716 Commercial Drive. Please enter by the door around the back of the building. The main front entrance will be closed since the meeting time is after store hours. The second week of May will be packed with multiple classes taught by our guest instructor, Deneb Puchalski with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks. Deneb will take a break from classes to be our monthly meeting speaker. Deneb has spent years honing his hand-tool skills in a variety of fields. After completing the 12-week program at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine, and a six-month stint there as the artist in residence, Deneb went to work at Lie-Nielsen Toolworks. He is a hand tool expert and has spent many years demonstrating and teaching the use of woodworking hand tools all over the United States and Canada. This will be our last monthly meeting before the summer hiatus. We hope you get out to enjoy the Alaska summer and will see you again in September for more classes, the Open Shop program and the monthly meetings. |

April Monthly Meeting Recap: The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May. Arnie Geiger was the presenter at our April monthly meeting. He first provided a brief history of the early years of the club before going into a demonstration of how to tune up a jointer. In the process. he swapped our dull Powermatic jointer plane blades so we now have a new sharp set ready for use. Arnie’s association with the ACWA goes back to its founding more than 40 years ago. . |

Volunteer Appreciation: Preparing for a big event requires lots of time and preparation. The Woodworkers Chapter Board of Directors has been in the planning for months to bring our membership a high caliber set of 3 classes taught by our guest instructor, Deneb Puchalski. The heaviest lift to make this happen is in the final weeks as the student registration solidifies. Several volunteers are required to organize guest accommodations, ensure enough tools can be borrowed for class use by students, and purchase class materials. Then there are the multiple long days spent to mill boards and cut hundreds of pieces to size for students, all with the goal to keep the class fees as low and affordable as possible. We would like to recognize 3 of the volunteers that spent many, many days to help make this possible: Sandy McKinnis, Jim Powell and Alan Peck. Thank you so very much! . |
|
|
Open Shop Program: Woodworking Wednesday: The Open Shop Program is typically offered every Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. to provide opportunities for members to have access to the workshop and the volunteer shop monitors will be there to help folks with projects as needed. Wednesdays in May are the last available of the Open Shop program until we resume in the autumn after the summer break. Please Note: If you want to use the shop, you need to sign up on the website as we can only have a maximum of 4 students in the shop on each date (https://www.alaskacreativewoodworkersassociation.org/book-online). You will need to indicate what you are planning to build, what kind of help you need and the time you will be there. . |

Classes available in May: We have quite an amazing offering for the last spring classes before we end for the summer. We are excited about bringing up our guest instructor Deneb Puchalski with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks from Warren, Maine to teach 2 different hand tool classes (one repeats as a day and evening class). Deneb will also be our presenter at the May 14 monthly meeting. Brief Class Descriptions: 1) “Hand Tools Demystified” teaches how to sharpen, tool setup, how various tools work together. Build simple jigs such as bench hooks and shooting boards. This class is offered as both a day and an evening class. 2) “Core Tools in Use: Build a Tool Chest” takes the concepts taught in the "Hand Tools Demystified" class and puts it to reality through learning scale and proportion and using the tools to build a tool chest. Deneb will walk you through the basics of course, medium, and fine cuts, and discuss how different types of hand tools work together. The principles covered in this course will easily translate to future woodworking projects that are hand tools only or incorporating hand tools with power tools. |
