7 Ghanaians, 1 Chinese missing as fishing vessel sinks at Saltpond

 

Seven Ghanaians and one Chinese have gone missing after a fishing vessel, MV Comforter 2 is reported to have sunk in the wee hours of last Friday, May 6, 2022, along the Elmina- Takoradi marine waters.

 

Its last known position was said to be 46 nautical miles South of Saltpond.

Dead Diver and Cocaine Found After Bulker Docks in Australia

 

Australian police and border protection services are investigating a bulker that arrived in Newcastle over the weekend after the body of a diver was discovered along the shoreline and packets believed to be cocaine were later found in the harbor. Authorities said the port had been under observation as a point of risk for drug smuggling but they are puzzled by the odd circumstances of this situation leading them to believe it is part of a larger smuggling effort.

Tonga volcano was the most ferocious eruption in 140 years

 

Scientists have begun to piece together what happened during the January 15 eruption of the undersea Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano about 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Tonga's capital that killed at least three people. The eruption has defied easy explanation and upended scientists' understanding of this type of volcano.

Supporting Kenya to develop National Maritime Security Risk Register

 

Identifying emerging threats to maritime security is key in developing the right tools to ensure sound maritime security governance.

To address this, thirty participants from multiple Kenyan Government Ministries and Agencies with responsibility for maritime security policy and operational implementation are taking part in a five-day IMO-sponsored workshop (9-13 May). They will assist the Kenyan Government in the development of its National Maritime Security Risk Register.

Abuja MoU: Harmonizing port State control and flag State implementation

 

The main objective of the workshop was to provide a platform to create awareness on the duties and responsibilities of the Heads of Maritime Administrations on port State control matters and to exchange views and discuss experiences to enhance the harmonization of port State control (PSC) activities and flag State implementation in the Abuja MoU region. They also discussed information sharing capabilities.

Supporting port security in Madagascar

 

The workshop is focusing on the legislative aspect of maritime security. Participants are also discussing improving the collaboration of the various bodies involved in maritime security and strengthening the know-how of the Port Facility Security Officers (PFSO) - who develop security plans and procedures for the port facilities. The workshop is the first of a series of activities in Madagascar under a port security project, sponsored by the European Union.

ECOP VIRTUAL TRAINING PROGRAMME DAY 4: Presentation on Impact of IUU in Africa: Awareness on the Importance of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Blue Economy delivered by Dr. Kwame Mfodwo

 

The Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Virtual Training Programme, titled Exploring Pathways to a Vibrant Ocean Economy for Africa, included a series of lectures and interactions aimed at equipping selected participants with first-hand knowledge about the blue economy. It further explored approaches to harnessing the ocean and its resources as an integral tool for advancing economic growth and development across the continent, through the development of a sustainable and equitable ocean economy.


This programme was designed for ECOPs with varying backgrounds in the fields of ocean governance, maritime security, marine environmental protection, law of the sea and other maritime-related areas. Individuals with an undergraduate or master’s degree in economics, international relations, marine conservation, maritime security or any other relevant field, with a general passion for the ocean or an interest in advancing Africa’s blue economy were also encouraged to apply.


This training was offered in partnership with the ECOP Programme, an endorsed Action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and was funded through the generous support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the IOC-UNESCO. As such, the course was freely available to all selected applicants.
