Note from the Director

by Patricia Cream

Spring is in the air!  I love seeing the longer days of sunlight, and with spring comes the quarterly gallery rehang. Once every quarter, all the artists bring in their new paintings, jewelry, fused glass, and ceramics for new wall and floor displays. It is an exciting time to see what the artists have been working on for the past three months. With the COVID-19 numbers down and Bernalillo County in the yellow zone, we are hoping to see more of our valued customers. The Gallery ABQ is now open Tuesday–Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

March brings a new Salon Show: Virginia Primozic, Paper Artist. She lives in Gallup, NM. The element that unifies her work is the non-traditional medium of paper. Except for some occasional under painting, the paper supplies all the color. Virginia selects subjects that are meaningful to her or impress her with intensity and depth of color, communicating truth, goodness, and beauty. The artist reception will be on March 5th, 5:00–8:00 p.m.

January’s show and sales for “In Memoriam, the Nature Photography of Jeremy Stein” were successful, and we continued to display his prints through February. The Gallery ABQ partnered with the New Mexico BioPark Society (NMBPS) to showcase Jeremy’s photography, with 75% of sales going to help the Society. Our total donation to the NMBPS was $1,325.00 through February. We will be giving the check to the NMBPS in March. We have not set a date for this ceremony.

We are excited to announce that Risa Taylor and I are showing our artwork at the New Mexico Cancer Center, Gallery with a Cause. The Spring show is called “The Art of Quarantine” February 22 through May 21, 2021. Also, we can look forward to Jeff Warren and Greg Lujan participating in the summer show.

The Gallery ABQ has earned the NM Safe Certification, and we are following the NM guidelines for the COVID Safe Practices. Masks and social distancing are required.

The Gallery ABQ Salon Show for March 2021 features the art of

Virginia Primozic

The central element that unifies my work is the non-traditional medium of paper. With the exception of some occasional under painting, paper supplies all the color. Sometimes the paper itself is just the right shade, other times multiple layers and combinations of color are required to achieve the right hue and intensity. Since the papers are derived from organic matter, they yield various natural colors and textures which add their own unique beauty. No paper is truly transparent, though some are so thin they can almost function as a glaze, while others are so heavy they can be difficult to control. I apply the papers to the canvas with an acrylic medium, and finish each piece with a UV coating.

Like most artists, I choose subjects that are meaningful to me or impress me with their intensity and depth of color, or that communicate simple truth, goodness, and beauty. My work is successful when it touches more than the viewer’s eye and draws them into a shared moment, memory, or emotion beyond the limited expression of the subject.
