Creative Solutions for a New World Season Two and World Premiere |
What One Person Can Do More than a dozen incredible world-class speakers, authors, artists, and songwriters will explore what an individual can do to make a difference in addressing big issues like climate change, watershed and forest protection and influence elected leaders and policy makers, in Season Two of Creative Solutions for a New World - Climate and Artists fall webinar series to be held Wednesdays, 11 am to noon (Pacific Time), from September 9th to November 25th. |
Multi award-winning author and environmental philosopher, Kathleen Dean Moore, will open the series on Wednesday, September 9th. Dr. Moore, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, was for many years Distinguished Professor of Environmental Philosophy at Oregon State University, until she left academia to write and speak full-time about the moral urgency of climate action. |
Her climate-ethics books include: Moral Ground: Ethical Action for a Planet in Peril, Great Tide Rising, and the forthcoming Bearing Witness: The Human Rights Case against Fracking and Climate Change. She blogs on her website and lives in Corvallis, Oregon. Kathleen will be joined by author Bob Sandford, Global Water Futures Chair in Water and Climate Security at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. |

In her presentation entitled, The Barn’s Burnt Down, Dr. Moore notes that as spreading global catastrophes burn away business as usual, we can see the smoking structure of violence and injustice that has supported capitalist extractive economies. She sifts the ashes for old, best forgotten, moral assumptions and imagines what ethical structures we might build, now we have a chance to do it over after the pandemic and get it right this time. |

Other series speakers include artists, scientists, youth and leading experts in Indigenous relations and reconciliation, health and wellness, US politics, forests, water, and climate. Although we took a hiatus from our webinar series this summer, we didn't take a break from standing up for our precious trees and forests. In addition to calling on our government for a New Forest Framework and reminding local governments of the importance of trees, this October 8th, we will host the international premiere of the short film Awaken. Created by Creatively United in partnership with Ballet Victoria, this film features original music composed, sung and orchestrated by Canada's multi award-winning legend, Ann Mortifee, in collaboration with former Chilliwack band member, Ed Henderson (guitar), and Finn Manniche (cello). |
The story follows the delightful journey of a young girl and her dog who discover the magical wonders of the forest thanks to guidance from forest sprites. Shot in one of the few remaining intact wild urban forests in Saanich, the film Awaken was created to help bring awareness to the importance of protecting and preserving forest habitat. |
This film will be introduced by co-producers Frances Litman, founder of Creatively United, and Paul Destrooper, Artistic Director of Ballet Victoria, at the opening night performance of Ballet Victoria's The Little Prince. Both are presented thanks to the generous sponsorship of Creatively United's esteemed partner Jon O'Riordan of the Gail O'Riordan Climate and the Arts Legacy Series and the City of Victoria Strategic Plan Grant. Stay tuned for other viewing opportunities of Awaken. |
