COSCA Convener Guide

Highland Gatherings and Games are traditional events that members of a clan use to renew their family bonds and compare feats of prowess. Clan conveners sponsor and host tents celebrating their heritage and encouraging society membership. COSCA has compiled advice and examples from many clan societies to provide the ultimate clan convener guide. Examples of guides are included from Clan Forbes Society, Clan Davidson, Clan Wallace Society Worldwide, Clan Hay, and Clan MacLaren Society of North American.

Genealogist Barbara J. Ball Offers Synopsis of Results from Survey of Clan Genealogists

Last December 2021, Clan Cunningham Genealogist Barbara J. Ball, PhD, QG, mailed questionnaires to genealogists at 58 clan societies of the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations, Inc. She asked simply what tasks the clan genealogist performed. She received responses 30 organizations. Some respondents offered one email in which they described their activities in brief or more completely. Several engaged in a back and forth conversation over email which gave her a better idea of what they were doing. More than one wondered about the possibility of forming some kind of online ‘clan genealogists’ group.

"Find My Clan" Database Update

Clan Society Input: COSCA sent e-mails to 100 clan society contacts requesting their assistance in updating their clan pages. So far, we've received updates from about 20 clan societies. The next phase will be aligning the list of septs and affiliated families with the surname search function.

Agreement with ScotClans: Rodger Moffat of ScotClans Ltd. has agreed to allow COSCA to use his company's crest designs if COSCA adds a link from every clan page that includes the  artwork. These links will be added once ScotClans send the information.

Co-Branding with Clans and Scottish Societies of Canada: The Clans and Scottish Societies of Canada (CASSOC) showed great interest in sharing this online resource. Therefore, COSCA has agreed to co-brand the new Quick Response (QR) Code flyer which societies can display at all their events. Visitors simply point their cellphone cameras at the code, click on the link that pops up, and then find their surname and associated clan and society.

COSCA Treasurer Clark Rhea Scott, 81, of Charlotte, North Carolina, took his final flight on May 1, 2022, surrounded by his immediate family. Clark was born on May 13, 1940, in Centralia, Illinois, and grew up in East Texas and Venezuela. In 1961, Clark met his wife, Judith Josefina Campos of Anaco, Venezuela, at the Mobil Oil Company Club. Clark began his three-decades-long aviation career with Pan American World Airways in 1966. His interest in genealogy led to volunteering with Clan Scott for over 40 years, the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations (COSCA), and Scottish Heritage USA. Funeral Mass was held on May 14, 2022, in Fort Mill, SC, and burial took place in Murchison, TX, on May 18, 2022.
