On to the week's news... hertelier round-up of interesting news about the hotel industry and women in business: - Uneven recovery. STR reported this week in the U.S. the leisure-led demand surge had occupancy surpassing the 60% level for the first time since early March 2020, but many cities still remain in recession. While there's no disputing the travel recovery is underway, in some countires and markets, others desparately behind. Skift offers a breakdown by country, showing the US, Mexico and China leading while Europe and other parts of Asia lag.
- Travel rend: family reunions. According to the New York Times, the strongest area for lesiure travel is family reunions citing surveys from Wyndham Destinations: 75 percent of respondents said they were planning to travel for a family reunion in 2021; and a March survey from American Express Travel, 71 percent of respondents said they planned to travel to visit loved ones they hadn’t been able to see during the pandemic. Interviews with travel agents show not only are family gatherings planned, people are spending more on each trip and staying longer.
- Women's pockebooks hit hardest by Covid-19 and what companies need to do to about it. This week Bloomberg reported "U.S. Women Had to Work 42 More Days to Earn What Men Did in 2020" citing new data from the Pew Research Center which claimed "as droves of women left the workforce last year, those who managed to hold onto their jobs made 84% of what men earned." Meanwhile, the Harvard Business Review, suggests in the article "To Retain Women, U.S. Companies Need Better Childcare Policies" to include women in the decision-making on policy and to create an environment that acknowledges the role of parents, thereby reducing the need for parents to have to hide their childcare challenges from work.
