Foot on the Knee in Tree..Good or Bad?

My main mentor is a big critical thinker and has taught me to question everything, for example:

Why use a particular cue?

Is that reason validated by modern movement science?

Is the cue necessary?

There are a few outdated yoga cues, often passed down from teacher to teacher (and occasionally layered in emotionally-sensitive dogma) with no substantiated reasoning to back it up.

For example, the familiar "avoid the knee in tree pose" cue.

Below is a short tutorial on my thoughts...

If you want to read a bit more of the science behind this idea, a fantastic study The training—injury prevention paradox: should athletes be training smarter and harder? demonstrates the importance of appropriate load and training for injury prevention. While the subjects were "athletes", tissue is tissue and whether you are a yoga practitioner or consider yourself an "athlete" this applies to everyone who wants to reduce their risk of injury and feel their best in everyday life!

Come play in tree pose with me next week!

Much love,

Jen
