Happy Leap Day! So happy that the little groundhog didn't see his shadow this year and the dream of spring is getting close! To be honest, I never really pay attention to that but had to look it up as an excuse to talk about this sunshine we have been having. |

This month I started two of the portraits for my project with the ArtsBuild. It was a completely new experience for me to sculpt in those circumstances but I really enjoyed it. So thankful to have done a warm-up portrait prior because I felt like I was really able to run the race during my first two hour session with the sitters. From all the information and measurements I have, I can do a lot of work before they come back. It is a lot different than hiring a model to come sit. These sitters are business owners so I am having to be as efficient as possible to not take up too much of their time....all while having a fairly in-depth conversation. Definitely proving to be a hand workout to say the least! |

Here's a behind the scenes look at the first stages of the portraits after our initial 2 hour session. Not the most beautiful stage but could be the most important and one that isn't put on display very often. After this is when I need to work in an organized way by measurements, anatomy, and photos to set everything up before having them come sit again with the camera. If you are local, I will be hosting two painting events in April for the community portion of my residency. One will be at the Crabtree Farm Plant Sale on Saturday April 20, so hope to see you there! If not for me, come for the plants :) Tomorrow the ArtsBuild will send out the Arts + Climate Newsletter, if you want to join their mailing list, I will add a link below. (Also just so happen to be their featured artist of the month :) ) |

Here's a check-in with the portrait from January...finally closing in on the forms. But since this one is not apart of the portrait project it has kind of been placed on the back burner for now. Hopefully will be able to call her finished soon! |

So this sconce is from the studio but for the home. I am so excited that this month I finally was able turn the 'camino study no. 1' into a sconce for our bedroom! I cannot wait to cast one for the other side of the bed. The fact that they sell the hardware needed to make lamps is so exciting to me. I can't wait to play around this year with some new possibilities of lighting. Because if you can't find it, you've just got to make it. Right? |

We had a few really nice days this past month so of course that meant I jumped at the opportunity to take my drawing meditation outside even if it meant drawing the buds for one. |
|
|
**FUN FACT** The symbolism behind this gorgeous smelling bud is actually not the most pleasant. The name Hyacinth came from Hyacinthus, one of Apollo's lovers. It is said that Hyacinthus and Apollo were playing discus and Zephyrus, jealous of the lovers, sent a wind to blow the discus off course to hit Hyacinthus in the head. Apollo was devastated by Hyacinth's death, and as he stood over the young prince, crying for his loss, his tears merged with the blood from the man's head-wound, and the tears and blood combined to create the flower, the hyacinth, which bears Hyacinth's name to this day. *not my usual fun fact but I just personally love the flower and mythology so I thought I would share the story* |

This month was all about finding a groove and sticking with it. It was nice to have the weekends at home to cook and just enjoy crossing the small things off the big to-do list. February always has just always seemed like a slow and grey month, so while it wasn't quite that this year, we definitely were cooking slow meals like we had all the time in the world. (Also always good to slow down a bit so that there is maximum energy ready to be used at the studio) But you know I am waiting so patiently until I can get an all-clear from the weather to go get my hands dirty in the yard as well. I've already spread some pollinator seeds and am planning out where I want to move plants around/add new. |

So this threw me for a loop in the best way possible...I am big lover of bread and a huge lover of a flaky croissant. Naturally this means I love phyllo in any form it can come but I did not know it was so easy to work with at home! Game. Changer. We used the Athens brand phyllo crust in the freezer section. Follow the directions on the box for a savory tarte crust then top with carmelized veggies (onion, garlic, fennel, purple cabbage, mushrooms) brie, and walnuts. BIG bonus if you have truffle olive oil to top it with! |
