37th Annual Billy Taylor Day Celebration "CELEBRATING A LEGACY" Saturday, August 24th 12 PM to 5 PM FREE to the Public Music, Food, Backpack giveaway, Family, Friends, Community Join us on Saturday, August 24th, from 12 PM to 5 PM, for the 37th Annual Billy Taylor Day at Billy Taylor Park, located at 124 Camp Street in Providence. This annual celebration honors the legacy of William "Billy" Taylor, a beloved community leader and advocate who dedicated his life to the betterment of the Mount Hope neighborhood. William A. Taylor was born on May 27, 1956, in Providence, Rhode Island, the eighth child of sixteen. Despite being born with a heart condition that required open-heart surgery at the age of two, he grew up to be a dynamic and inspiring figure. Taylor attended Rhode Island College, where he served as President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the Student Harambee group. While Treasurer, Taylor served as the Mount Hope Neighborhood Association's Director of the Youth Department. In this role, Taylor was an advocate for services and aide to the Mount Hope community youth. After graduating from Rhode Island College in 1977, Taylor became more active in the Mount Hope community that stretches from Rochambeau Avenue to Olney Street between North Main and Camp Street. He formed a group with Pleasant Street residents called “Pleasant Street Peasants” (PSP). After graduating in 1977, Taylor continued his community involvement, forming the "Pleasant Street Peasants" (PSP) group with residents of Pleasant Street. The PSP aimed to broaden the horizons of Mount Hope youth, organizing trips to movies, parks, museums, and more—offering experiences beyond their immediate environment. Tragically, Taylor passed away on May 10, 1986, at just 29 years old. In his honor, the community named the park on 124 Camp Street after him, creating a lasting tribute to his work and vision. This year's celebration will feature music, food, and a gathering of family, friends, and community members. It's a free event open to all, celebrating Taylor's enduring impact on our community. |
