What's New

I'm pleased to announce dates and registration for this summer's College Application Workshop Series!

This five-session series provides instruction, structure, and accountability for rising 12th graders who are applying to college.

Each of the first four sessions focuses on important components of the Common Application, which is used by over 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities for first-year admission:

  1. Introduction to the Common Application

  2. Common App Activities (choosing activities to include in the application, developing clear and concise activity descriptions)

  3. Personal Essay (examining the role of the personal essay in the college application, generating ideas and beginning a draft)

  4. Supplemental Essays (exploring common supplemental essay prompts, generating ideas and beginning a draft of one school-specific essay for a college on your list)

The fifth and final Ask Anything session is a "catch all" for lingering application questions and topics not yet addressed, which may include letters of recommendation, admission interviews, application submission, and more, depending on participants' needs and interests.

Registration is OPEN for the Intro to Common App and Common App Activities sessions!

Dates, Deadlines, & Reminders

  • If you have not submitted it already, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is still open! To get started, you will need to create your FSA ID first. Always check individual schools for their specific financial aid deadlines! (Remember that you need to file a FAFSA in order to receive federal unsubsidized student loans, even though they are available to any student, regardless of financial need).

  • Before the end of the school year, 11th graders should…

    • Meet with their school counselor to discuss college plans and identify school policies related to college applications.

    • Request letters of recommendation (for college applications) from two teachers of core academic subjects at school. For more on whom and how to ask, check out my blog article on this subject.

  • Before the end of the school year, all high school students should make a plan for the summer. How do you want to spend your time, and what can you do now to set up a productive and meaningful experience?

5 Tips for Starting Your College Applications

Summer is upon us, and it's time for 11th graders (now rising 12th graders) to begin their college applications. I know what you're thinking: Already?
