Staying True to Your Decided Heart:
It doesn’t matter if you are at home or work, the easiest way to stay true to your Decided Heart is to know your why and plan ahead where you can.
Last month, we had the privilege of speaking to some of the top doctors in the biotech industry about connecting with their people. After listening to their staff, they all came back with one key suggestion – they wanted to be authentically inspired by their leaders. They wanted to get behind the vision of their leader and truly see their purpose - their why beyond money and title. Can something so seemingly easy really be so important? YES! Not only for your people, but for you.
Why do you do the work you do? You might say paycheck. That’s fine, but why is the paycheck important? Is it for your family? Why is providing for your family important? Ah – see where we are going now? On a really difficult day at work, instead of being disconnected from purpose, you can connect with your true why – your “cry why” – the one that you may have to dig to find. Once connected with your purpose, many of the difficult things are either washed away, or you may be able to get the perspective to solve them in creative and non-confrontational ways.
For this group of doctors, one leader spoke up with a quiet and unsteady voice. “I am here for my brother. He nearly died of cancer at 8 years old and that changed my whole life. He was lucky and has a family now. I want to make sure that we can remove as much luck from this as possible and find real cures and therapies to improve the lives of cancer patients.” The room grew quiet. Heads nodded solemnly. In this climate of the “Great Resignation,” financial strains, and overall unrest, it is easy to lose our why. That doctor’s willingness to speak his Decided Heart why shifted the whole energy in the room. Everyone filled up on the purpose of their work for the rest of the day, you could feel the purposefulness given to the tasks at hand.
So, we ask again. What is your why? If it doesn’t inspire you and move you, dig deeper. Keep asking why until you get to the one that makes your eyes water, your stomach flutter, and your heart quicken – your “cry why.” That is when you will know why you are there. Write it down, post it where you can see it, and call on it every time you feel yourself wavering in your Decided Heart.
In this month’s masterclass, we will take this one step further and really think through what obstacles can come up in our lives and how we will handle each one, so we are best equipped to stay true to our Decided Hearts.
