The Gallery ABQ News and Updates

Note from the Director

June 2022

by Patricia Cream

In June, The Gallery ABQ will have New Mexico Artists expressing their individuality in the Salon Show titled “Celebration of Pride.” The “Celebration of Pride” isn’t just about the gay/lesbian community, but uniqueness in different styles of art. The show is open to all 2D and 3D artists.

The purpose of the commemorative month-long celebration is to recognize the impact that LGBTQI individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. More importantly, it’s about celebrating our diverse community—its solidarity, connectivity, identity, and resistance to discrimination and violence. Artists value being supported by all, being a part of a greater purpose, and treating everyone with respect. The Gallery really depends on friends, family, neighbors and community for the diverse group that supports each of our artists. Come join us for the "Celebration of Pride" reception, June 3, 5–8 p.m.

Call for Artists: If you are a local artist looking for a Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery to show your art, please go to our website (link below) to get more information about our gallery. The application is online.  If you are interested, please send in your application and we can set up a jury date.

The Gallery ABQ Featured Artist for June

Marlies Diels

Featured Artist Interview

Marlies Diels (pottery)

by Linda Weiss

The Featured Artist for June at The Gallery ABQ is Marlies Diels, the gallery’s only ceramic artist.  In conjunction with ARTScrawl, a reception will be held on June 3, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm.  Marlies’ pottery is a testament to her love of functional art, which started with her master’s degree in Industrial Design. In addition to making her pottery, Marlies has been teaching ceramics/pottery, sculpture, and hand building. One time in Berkeley, she taught pottery and sculpture to blind people.

Marlies likes the precision of her art and enjoys the glazing experience, to which, in the past, she employed reduction firing in a gas kiln (reduction firing uses an open kiln so that the air comes in).  She determined that this method of firing pottery was too experimental for her needs, and so now she only does oxidation firing with an electric kiln. The time-consuming process includes throwing the clay, drying the piece of pottery, trimming it, drying it again, firing at a low temperature, glazing it, and then firing it at a high temperature. All of her pottery is food safe.

Marlies, originally from Berlin, Germany, has been inspired by her travels, mostly throughout Europe. When she can’t travel, Marlies gets inspiration from other sources, including art galleries and nature. Marlies has been living in the United States since the 1970’s.

Come meet Marlies in person at The Gallery ABQ reception on June 3, 2022, from 5-8:00 pm, and ask her about her whole process!

The Gallery ABQ has added two new artists!

Introducing new artist

Dana Millen

Dana Millen, Ph.D., MPH, has been trained in Public Health (Master of Public Health) and with a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies. She is an activist, feminist, social justice reformer, and artist.

Her work represents a post -impressionistic style of painting while also embracing the abstract. The use of color to feel emotion and connect with people is vital to the works that Dana creates.

"I paint because I view art as revolution – as resistance to despair in these desperate and changing times. I paint as a way to honor the earth and the beauty of our world – in the midst of sadness – and to make it whole. I paint to perform acts of justice, to engage in “Tikkun Olam” – healing of the world."

Introducing new artist:

Judy Rose

Silver ‘n Stones

Judy has continued her life’s interest in art with painting and more recently wearable art using silver and stones. Utilizing sterling silver and on occasion PMC (Precious Metal Clay/fine silver), she finds herself intrigued with texture in her metals. Adding stones and different metals often add yet another dimension to her work.  Her work can be found in art galleries in New Mexico, Montana, and Wyoming.

“Working with silver and stones has allowed me to go on a journey of endless shapes and textures while creating ‘wearable art’ so folks may enjoy art in their daily lives.”

The Gallery ABQ Featured Artist for July will be

Jeff Warren

For the next six months, The Gallery ABQ will run an ad in Albuquerque Journal on the First Fridays of every month and the following Thurday.

Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.
