Apple picking fails and wagging tails

Fall fun, writer's retreat, Bark Mitzvah, and a cycling couple.

Sunday, October 10, 2021

Hello from Boone, North Carolina! I've been on a writers' retreat this weekend at the Art of Living Retreat Center but did prepare a newsletter ahead of time. The retreat, "Creating from the soul" with best-selling author Mari Andrew, as been amazing and inspiring, and I'm excited to share more next week.

Fall is so beautiful here, so I drew a pretty and funny autumnal doodle about going apple picking last month in New York. I also made a cute event poster for "The Bark Mitzvah" and a portrait of a spin instructor with her now-husband. Plus, watch video of my moving fails doodle from a few weeks ago.

Enjoy!

If you're new to Danielle in Doodles, welcome! I publish this newsletter of my latest doodles and updates most Sundays, and you can see archives here.

Apple picking realities versus expectations

The most basic — and fun — fall activity/photo opp has some challenges. I'll obviously continue to go every year, of course.

Here are pictures from my recent apple picking outing! I tried to carry the apples, but it didn't last long. Pro tip: If you can't carry an enormous bag of apples, go with someone who can!

Bark Mitzvah event poster

Someone from events nonprofit Value Culture reached out and hired me to make a poster for an event called "Bark Mitzvah." From working in print media, I've hired designers to do things like this, but I've never been on this side. It came with a challenge — use only three colors. I think it came out well! If you live in San Francisco, consider going!

Love on a spin bike

My friend Alexa joined me in Asheville this week. Coincidentally, her friend, an instructor at Cyclebar — a spin studio — was getting married here, too. She said I could tag along at the after-party. I couldn't show up empty handed, so I doodled her and her now husband. I don't want this couple to know how long I spent trying to get that kiss to look right ... And riding a spin bike is just about as hard as drawing one.

Video: moving fails

I shared a doodle a few weeks ago about past moving fails. They're actually not about my most recent move because that was too fresh to doodle. See the video version, which includes footage of me driving a Uhaul. Never again in NYC!

Retreat reflections tease

I will share much more next week after I've reflected and processed, but I wanted to share the notebook I drew in while I was there and the beautiful background — the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains!

Thanks for reading! I'll share Chanukah book progress — and maybe a pre-order link! — and retreat reflections next time. I have so many ideas for the future and am very excited about the Chanukah book!!
