LONG COVID IN CHILDREN: WHAT PARENTS & TEACHERS NEED TO KNOW

Research on long COVID in adults has revealed a long list of symptoms. Early evidence suggests that many of these are also shared by children. In the Italian preprint, symptoms often found in adults – such as fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headache, insomnia, respiratory problems and heart palpitations – were reported frequently in children.

A separate, larger preprint â€“ which surveyed the parents of children with long COVID, predominantly in the UK and US – found similar results. Across a sample of 510 children, tiredness and weakness (87%), headaches (79%), abdominal pain (76%) and muscle and joint pain (61%) were common. Gastrointestinal symptoms were also reported relatively frequently, as were skin complaints such as rashes.

The pandemic has affected children and young people in many ways. Some have missed a year of school. Children’s mental wellbeing has also suffered, and a reduction in physical activity and fitness is a health risk too. Importantly, children and young people are reported to be fearful about their future. If long COVID is added to this mix, the challenges are immense.

TRAILBLAZING USE OF LIGHT TO KILL VIRUSES GIVEN UK GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

Use of a new type of ultraviolet light to safely kill airborne viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19, has come a step closer to reality with £296,000 of new government funding for a project led by the University of St Andrews to investigate its safety and efficacy.

If the project is successful this new type of ultraviolet light could be safely used to significantly reduce the risk of person-to-person indoor transmission of Covid-19, as well as other diseases such as influenza.

Lord Bethell, Health Minister at the UK Department of Health and Social Care, said:

“I am delighted that we are funding this trailblazing study by the University of St Andrews.

“This could give us a brand new weapon in our fight against Covid-19, harnessing the unique power of ultraviolet light to help eliminate the risk posed by this dreadful virus"

THINK LONG COVID

Not all families will know that their children had COVID-19 as many children are asymptomatic or atypical and there has never been a clear awareness campaign. Regardless of the severity of inital COVID-19 infection, children can experience

Long COVID and Paediatric Inflammatory Multi-System Syndrome (PIMs)

FAMILY STORY

"She even spent time under 24-hour surveillance to rule out self harm even though she had no prior history of mental health issues.

Some doctors have made us feel like we are crazy.

In early Dec they looked at one of her lesions through electron microscopy and found abundant viral particles that were consistent in size with Covid-19"

REMEMBER

WITH

LONG COVID

Symptoms can fluctuate.

Children with Long Covid often tire easily.

Symptoms often come in clusters but not always.

Not every symptom is visible.

Children may seem to recover between initial infection & Long Covid.

Doctors can refer children to Long Covid assessment clinics from 4 weeks post-infection, but not very many areas have them yet.

GP awareness is growing slowly, families need support not pressure.
