First Refill Station a Big Success! |
EAC volunteers Donella Davidson and Chris Shatto, took a field trip to Durham in early-July and met with Fillaree founder and owner Alyssa Cherry to pick up the first order of refillable products. Fast forward just a couple of weeks and community members came to Lineside Makers Market on the afternoon of July 27th with their empty containers indicating the word was getting out about Refill Waynesville. A total of 74 items were sold, which means 74 plastic bottles were kept out of the landfill! See the recent article, "Bring Your Empty Bottles to the Refill Station...Reduce, reuse, and… refill?" in The Mountaineer, July 31, 2024 for the full story and photos. |

EAC at Historic Haywood Farmers Market |
On Saturday, July 20th, EAC volunteers joined the Historic Haywood Farmers Market to share our plastics free mission. We distributed reusable feed & seed bags made by EAC volunteers for customers' produce and plants. Even the Golden Retriever knew to bring his reusable bag! We introduced two upcoming events: Waynesville’s first Refill Station and the Plastic People documentary coming up on September 13th. People were encouraged to save their glass jars and refill them with soap, shampoo, lotion, or all-purpose cleaner at the next Refill Station on August 24th. Attendees curiosity was piqued with the “The Tower of Trash” and were amazed by the staggering amount of plastic bags each individual uses yearly. We signed up new folks interested in subscribing to our newsletter and/or interested in what the Environmental Action Community of WNC is all about. Look for EAC at the Milltown Farmers Market in Sorrell's Park, 8 Sorrells St, Canton on Thurs, October 3rd, 3:00 - 7:00 pm and again at HHFM on Sat, Oct 26th, 9:00 am - noon. |

The U.S. Forest Service has agreed to halt logging in a 15-acre area of the "Southside Project" in the Pisgah-Nantahala Land Management Plan after a lawsuit from regional environmental groups claimed it violated the National Forest Management Act. This area, near Cashiers in the Nantahala National Forest, is designated a "Special Interest Area" due to its waterfalls and rare plant species. Announced on June 21, the decision aims to avoid a prolonged legal battle, with conservation groups agreeing to drop the lawsuit. While the halt is a win for environmental protection, concerns remain about logging in other parts of the project. The Nantahala National Forest, the largest in North Carolina, spans over half a million acres and supports both recreational activities and timber harvesting. |

Tip of the Month: The Haywood County landfill is not a limitless space for the things we throw away. Do your part and come to the next Refill Station, August 24th, 12:00 - 4:00 pm. Bring your refillable bottles or jars, and like the reverse of that one lucky starfish, keep at least that one plastic container out of the landfill or our waterways. |

The Litter Reduction Act of 2024 would significantly reduce litter, dramatically increase recycling rates, generate millions in revenue for the state with increased material recovery fees, free up valuable landfill capacity, and contribute to the economy of North Carolina. Please sign and show your support! |
