Should Nuclear Energy be Expanded? Wednesday, Feb, 7th, 7 - 8:30 pm PT, Cook St. Activity Center, 380 Cook St. |
In a presentation to the Victoria Secular Humanist Association, Harald Wolf will lay out the many issues that need to be addressed when considering whether nuclear energy should be a critical component of tackling the climate crisis and future well-being, in Canada and elsewhere. While this has not been a big issue in BC in the past, there is considerable back-room lobbying going on and one party has added its promotion to their platform heading into the fall election, while another has removed opposition to it from theirs. Free admission. |

National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform |
On February 7th, a vote will be held in Parliament calling for a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. Please call your MP and ask them to vote Yes. The quality of our democracy is facing unprecedented threats. Low voter turnout, mistrust in institutions, polarization, and hostile partisan politics are of deep concern to many. Making progress on electoral reform requires political leadership, but politicians alone won’t fix the system that elected them. Learn more here |

Pension Funds Rally Monday, February 12th, 1 pm PT BC Investment Management Corp (BCI), 750 Pandora Avenue Submitted by: Save Our Forests Team, Comox Valley |
Are your pension funds tied to poor logging practices? Support initiatives by our local Island communities! Join SOFT-CV (Save Our Forests Team, Comox Valley) for a rally in Victoria at the office of BC Investment Management Corp (BCI). BCI is the major shareholder in both TimberWest and Island Timberlands, which together own most of the forested land on the east coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria to Campbell River. Mosaic Forest Management manages their forest operations. If you are a BC public servant (a teacher, college or university staff; a BC or municipal government employee; or work for Island Health, BC Hydro, BC Ferries, WorkSafe, and others), there's a very good chance that BCI is using your pension to fund poor forestry practices, fuelling climate change, continuing logging of old growth, and contributing to water shortage and quality issues on the east coast of Vancouver Island! If BCI puts pressure on TimberWest/Island Timberlands/Mosaic to log better, these companies will have to comply. But pension holders must put pressure on BCI first. This rally is one step in this process. Spread the word and plan to join us. If you can, come early (12:40) to help us sing/chant so that BCI will know we are there! We will highlight what you can do and deliver a second ultimatum to BCI, that they must use their ownership to set forestry in a new direction on their lands. (3) Take answers back to your group, and consider if you can use them to build a more integrated and powerful climate movement. Registration and more info here |
