the weekly Round-Up

Dear Round-Up Readers,

This week marked our 200th post!  How cool is that??  I'm also pleased to report that I'm now getting more emails about amazing women than I have the capacity to share!! Rest assured that I'm working very hard to figure out ways to scale hertelier so that we can keep telling these stories and amplifying the voices of women in hospitality.  If you have ideas or suggestions for me or your company is interested in supporting hertelier, please just reply to this email!

The tenth week of war: House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi made an unannounced visit to Kyiv over the weekend, the US has upped its support and is due to deliver new weapons this week.

  • President Biden has now proposed a new $33 billion plan that includes plan $20 billion in military aid, $8.5 billion in economic aid, and $3 billion in humanitarian aid. According to experts, this is definitely an escalation of efforts against Russia, for an explanation, listen to NYT The Daily, (26 minutes).
  • Energy for Europe is an immediate concern, according to the Washington Post, "under almost every scenario, the next 18 months are going to be a harrowing time for Europe..there are not enough alternatives in the near term to avoid major economic pain in the coming winter if Russia shuts down supply."
  • Also, actress and activist Angelina Jolie visited Lviv to bring awareness to the devastation.

Business News:

  • U.S. economy contracted in the first three months of the year, as supply constraints at home, demand shortfalls abroad, and rapid inflation worldwide weighed on an otherwise resilient recovery.
  • Compensation for American workers grew rapidly in the first quarter, as a tight labor market put more money in workers’ pockets while also keeping pressure on inflation.
  • Work from anywhere. Talk about living the brand, Airbnb told its 6,000 employees on Thursday that they would have the option to permanently work remotely, without a reduction in pay.

Women and business:

  • Workplace barriers exist for single women, too. While it’s well-documented that women with children face a "motherhood penalty" in their careers, researchers are now beginning to study obstacles facing another group: women who are single and don’t have children. New findings reveal that "even early in their careers, well-educated women without families are also disadvantaged because they are more often stereotyped as lacking leadership abilities. These women were often seen as too “masculine” for leadership when the same traits benefited single men. They also lacked the “communal, relational” leadership traits expected of women who were coupled and raising children."  Hear my massive {sigh} and read more in the WaPo.
  • Changing the all-male, all-white cockpit in airlines. As you know, commercial aviation has grown exponentially, democratizing travel and rewiring how Americans live, work and play. But you may not be aware, that one part of the industry has remained mostly the same. Piloting is stubbornly monolithic: About 95 percent of airline pilots in the U.S. today are male. Nearly as many are white. As airlines are struggling to find enough pilots, this is an opportunity to diversify a profession that has been very resistant to change.
  • Generation ageless. Loving the hot trend of the "Coastal Grandmother," and Martha Stewart, 80, as the new face of skincare on TikTok.  Also, read this rant, "stop treating us older ladies like we need protecting," from the Daily Mail, after Prince Harry suggested he might be able to advise the Queen.  HRH and the rest of women over the age of 60 seem to be doing just fine, thank you very much.
  • Nasty name games. Fashion giant Zara––owned by an even bigger conglomerate Inditex––has gone after two tiny women-owned businesses with similar yet completely different names, House of Zana in the UK and Tara in Vietnam. WTF?  The ladies are fighting back.

Travel news from the week:

  • SHaDPitch 2022: Congratulations to the winners and Tracy Prigmore on creating an amazing event on April 28, that is teaching scores of women about hotel ownership! We hope to bring you interviews and details on the results soon.  Meantime, check their Instagram for videos from the fabulous and fun event, that had strong support from all the big hotel brands, including a CEO panel.  Well done, Tracy, Viviana, and team!

  • Travel Weekly interviewed the legendary Danny Meyer on learnings from the pandemic and what's next with an A-List cast of travel editors (NYT, T+L, Nat. Geo, Town & Country, etc).  If there is one news story you click on from this newsletter, this should be it. Lots of insightful information on everything from staffing to dining trends.

  • Hotels with Net-Zero Ambitions: In honor of Earth Day, NY Times took a dive into how hotels are catering to eco-minded travelers.  The article cites Room2 Chiswick, whose sustainability efforts happen to be run by two women, Luana and Chantal, whom we interviewed back in December!  Reading hertelier gets you ahead of the NY Times!

  • Three ways Wyndham's people-first approach prepared it for digital transformation. Wyndham CMO Lisa Checchio and CFO Michele Allen shared three ways the company navigated COVID by focusing on teams and culture in Fast Company.

  • LOL: Bravo to Christine Trippi, aka The Wise Pineapple, for the hilarious Elon Musk Twitter spoof (see image at the base of email) BTW, if you missed it, Elon bought Twitter for $44 billion.

  • VERY cool foodie pics: winners of an international food photo contest, my favorite is Central Park made out of broccoli and cheese graters.

On hertelier this week:

Welcome to our new subscribers! The story in Forbes, How Women Are Changing The Hotel Industry, keeps bringing new readers! Super excited to have you here.

  • Speaking Out Against Sexist Remarks.  Last month, Canadian marketing executive Trina Notman was attending the BC Tourism Conference when Vivek Sharma, CEO of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort in the Columbia Valley, opened the gathering on March 9th, International Women’s Day by asking the women in the crowd of 500 to stand. After the applause died down, he said "now you can go clean some rooms and do some dishes."  Read why Trina didn't stop until Sharma was investigated and this incident made news around the globe.

  • Do you Think Introverts Make Bad Salespeople? You're Wrong.  Columnist Nancy Mendelson helps a reader who is in sales, and also introverted. Can you relate?

  • Is Your City or Destination Ready for Sustainable Tourism?  JLL's Bethany DeRose guides us through a new report on sustainable tourism growth.
