When Tobin decided he wanted to create Weâll Get This!, we were all in. None of us had any idea how to really implement his desire to help these families without either getting knee deep into their business or causing yet another burden by making them seek us out. Bit by bit, we were able to piece together a pretty good plan with the help of the terrific social workers at both Texas Childrenâs Hospital and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. We make up little packets with gas cards, parking vouchers or Uber cards, and give them to the social workers. Since they were aware of most familiesâ needs, they could get help to them quickly and easily.
The parking vouchers were easy. All I had to do is order them from the Texas Medical Center, but I had to haunt CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Kroger and HEB grocery stores all over Texas to find gas and Uber cards. Due to frequent fraud, I could only buy a few at a time. At one point we ended up getting quite a few compromised Shell gas cards, and although Shell was very good about replacing the cards, I felt terrible. I just pictured a family, after a long day of infusions, with their nauseated baby, stopping to get gas, and the gas card wonât work.
Whilst talking with Shell, I asked if there was a better, safer way to purchase gas cards. They sent me to a specific Shell station, and as luck would have it, when I called to see if I could get about 40 gas cards at a time, the Boss was with his Boss, and they agreed that I could! Bless them! So, every few weeks, I go see the Boss to procure my 40 gas cards. He is happy because it makes his store look good. The lovely woman who always checks me out is happy because it makes her register look good. I am happy because I donât have to zip into every CVS and Walgreens from here to Knippa to find gas cards. And the families we give them to are happy because they have a little relief with respect to their travel expenses. It really is perfect, and exactly how the world should go around.
Thank you for supporting Weâll Get This! and the families who need us the most.
