Bangkok Photo Rambles: You have quite a range of photographic interests. Do you have a favorite subject?
Jeff Harper: Yes, nature and corrugation and dilapidation (Old, undisturbed spaces formerly occupied by humans).
BPR: What inspired you to get into serious photography?
JH: I lived 10 years in the Congo (DRC) . . . it was visually phantasmagoric . . . I wanted to try and capture it. My ex-wife was a serious photographer and photography teacher.
BPR: You recently took a year-long trip around the U.S. taking photos of the American landscape. Tell us about that endeavor and what you learned.
JH: I love the natural beauty of the USA . . . such diverse topography, flora and fauna. I had a 4X4 camper truck outfitted to stay long periods 'off-grid.' Much solitude and long walks in undisturbed natural settings with my camera. I encountered some smoke issues because of the many forest fires in the West (especially in the Steen's mountains of Oregon) that limited some of my grand view photos.
BPR: You often go out on what we fondly call photo "rambles," in which you have no clear itinerary. What about these rambles do you like?
