FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER

Jeff Harper

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER

Q & A

Bangkok Photo Rambles: You have quite a range of photographic interests. Do you have a favorite subject?

Jeff Harper:  Yes, nature and corrugation and dilapidation (Old, undisturbed spaces formerly occupied by humans).

BPR: What inspired you to get into serious photography?

JH: I lived 10 years in the Congo (DRC) . . . it was visually phantasmagoric . . . I wanted to try and capture it. My ex-wife was a serious photographer and photography teacher.

BPR: You recently took a year-long trip around the U.S. taking photos of the American landscape. Tell us about that endeavor and what you learned.

JH: I love the natural beauty of the USA . . . such diverse topography, flora and fauna.  I had a 4X4 camper truck outfitted to stay long periods 'off-grid.'  Much solitude and long walks in undisturbed natural settings with my camera. I encountered some smoke issues because of the many forest fires in the West (especially in the Steen's mountains of Oregon) that limited some of my grand view photos.

BPR: You often go out on what we fondly call photo "rambles," in which you have no clear itinerary. What about these rambles do you like?

JH: Yes, I like that there is no firm agenda or timeframe for the rambles . . . just freewheeling in the moment . . . the photographic project being only "I was here and this is what I saw."

Bangkok Photo Rambles: Tell us about the two landscape photos. Where were they taken?

JH:  The crooked trees photo was taken in early September high up on Steen’s Mountain in southeast Oregon. The strange twisted trunks were caused by heavy, deep snow for long periods when the trees were young. The low clouds on the mountain photo is of the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in east-central California taken just north of Bishop. I had just come out of the high Sierra from a 7-day camping trip in late September when a storm delivering the first snow of the season drove me off the mountain.

BPR: Thank you for sharing your photos and story. Where can people see your work?

JH: Thank you for asking and featuring my work.  I have a very developed, and indexed, photoblog online.  drjeffbangkok.com
