Just a few days left until the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 surveys about the new Planning Scheme close on 31 March. Please have your say - we need to get this right!
Our previous email #12 and our various Facebook posts referenced some of 'elements' of Council's plans for their preferred 'development intensification' within the Kawana Waters Local Plan Area.

Be wary of the “Orwellian doublespeak” and the manipulation of language in the survey questions.
Survey question 1 for Kawana Waters asks: Do you agree or disagree with:
“Minimal changes in most existing low density housing areas in Buddina, Minyama, Parrearra, Warana, Wurtulla and Bokarina”
Why not ask 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬?
How much change do you agree with (for higher density and building heights) and across how much of the area? When YOU do your survey, you have the option at sections 5, 6, 7 for your own comments about this and other issues, such as:
- NO change to MOST parts of the existing low density housing areas OR
- Minimal change to SOME parts of the existing low density housing areas OR
- Minimal change to MOST parts of the existing low density housing areas.
This is just one example - all the more reason to have your say, either in the survey or by email.
The key change element for Kawana Waters in the new Planning Scheme is 𝙧𝙚𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 across expanded areas and WITHOUT any survey options for agreement to these key changes:
- Kawana Shoppingworld and surrounds (rezone ++ height increases across an extended area)
- Palkana Dr, Minkara St, Wyanda Dr, Thunderbird Dr, Bokarina Bvd, Moondara Dr & Piringa St (rezone ++ height increases across an extended area - villages)
- Production Ave & other Industrial land (rezone to mixed use residential ++ height increases)
- Nicklin Way commercial areas (rezone to mixed use residential ++ height increases)
Council’s “vision statement” and “planning directions” appear to lack disclosure and transparency by 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 rezoning statements from the survey questions. Sadly, much of the vision statement content and many of the planning directions also focus on 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 of the Kawana Waters LPA. Does this really reflect community aspirations and community values?
MTAG Update - sharing some good news for the region: MTAG email #25
$1.6 Billion Federal Funding Announced for CAMCOS
What a fantastic way to start the week. On Monday the Federal Government announced funding of $1.6billion for heavy rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore. A statement from Ted O'Brien's office (Federal Member for Fairfax) states:
"This will be the single biggest transport infrastructure investment in tomorrow night’s Federal Budget, and it represents the most transformative project our region will see in a generation.
The project will deliver a new 37 km passenger rail line, starting from the existing Beerwah station and passing through new stations at Caloundra and Kawana before landing at a new station in the Maroochydore CBD.
It will support over 9,500 jobs in the construction phase. The State Government will need to match the commitment for it to proceed but this is a real step forward."
MTAG has also been told there is not the money to do both the Mass Transit Project (Light Rail) and Heavy Rail. The Sunshine Coast Regional Council are still planning for Mass Transit (Light Rail) and proposing to densify housing along the Mass Transit Corridor in their proposed new planning scheme. This news puts their plan in serious question. There is even less certainty now that Light Rail will proceed and therefore to progress with high rise and increased densities in the corridor is irresponsible. Not only is Council's proposed plan likely to create more congestion but more importantly destroy the amenity and lifestyle of those living in the corridor. Council's thinking is completely out of sync with not only the Community, but what other levels of Government are planning.
