Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues, We, at REACH Shirati, are proud to share our first Teacher Feature from Tina’s Pre and Primary School in Nyamagongo, Tanzania! Throughout the year, we hope to introduce you to our exceptional teachers and share their stories and passion for teaching. It is through the hard work and commitment of dedicated teachers, that our goal of creating life-changing opportunities through education is made possible, in the Shirati region. |

Meet Madam Anna Headmistress of Tina’s Pre and Primary School Anna Serya, or Madam Anna has a warm, gentle, yet no-nonsense, manner. She is an excellent administrator, and a wonderful classroom teacher. The teachers and the students at Tina’s School find her approachable, kind, and fair, and they feel comfortable confiding in her. Once an orphan young girl ran away from abuse by the family she was staying with; Madam Anna found her and brought the situation to the attention of the Village Council. Madam Anna took the young girl to live with her own family until arrangements were made for the girl to live at a boarding school. |

How Madam Anna came to Nyamagongo Madam Anna, has been the Headmistress at Tina’s since 2014. She was born in 1986, and grew up in Tarime, near Shirati. She graduated from St. Augustine University in Mwanza in 2007, then taught in Mwanza for five years, during which time she was promoted to Headmistress at Glory English Medium School. In 2012, her husband, Fredy Magessa, also a teacher, was sent to teach secondary school in Shirati, leading Madam Anna to us. As she says, “I landed at Tina’s School, my home sweet, sweet home.” When asked why she became a teacher, Madam Anna’s answer was: “I like children, so I decided to become a teacher, and I love teaching. That’s all.”

We Love Our Teachers! Our dedicated and hard working teachers, like Madam Anna, are the the power behind our successful students. On the 2016 National Exams, Tina's Pre and Primary School placed 2nd in the local region, and among the TOP 2% in the country (168th in about 20,000)! Recently the Tanzanian government has nearly doubled public school teacher salaries, which is very good news! We have also committed to offer comparable salary increases and health insurance to our teachers and staff. This means a significant increase in our school operational costs for 2017. Please help us meet this challenge by creating a Teacher Support Circle, a fundraising group of your friends and family, who commit to supporting one of our teachers through your creative fundraising activities. A few Teacher Support Circles have formed already with fundraising ideas ranging from bake sales, to neighborhood garage sales! DONATE directly or Contact us to get started with your Teacher Support Circle!
