But why the elephant?

IT'S TIME TO ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

In the current...robust (ahem) political climate, I'm loath to post anything that would invite the vitriol that has unfortunately become the norm in political discourse.

That having been said, I've been asked by so many people over the past year why I chose an elephant for fixerrr's logo that I feel it's time to answer that question, put it out there into the universe, and let it marinade for those that may look at me differently as a result of my choice. (A colleague I very much like and admire actually said to me, "I think it's great that you've launched your own company but isn't the elephant a little.... Republican-y?") Here, once and for all is the answer to that question.

I chose the elephant because it embodies my message about communication: it's easy to be destructive - we all have the ability to destroy relationships, toxify our work environments, implode opportunities for ourselves, etc... - but it's better (for ourselves and others) to focus on what's important and to show our strength in gentle, but no less effective ways.

Elephants are enormously strong yet they're also incredibly social, family-focused and nurturing. They learn, communicate and remember and they, unlike many species (including some humans we might have heard of) are remarkably self-aware.  In short, they embody all of the best of what we hope from each other.

Strong enough to be imposing on their own, yet understanding of the benefits of being part of a community or work environment ...these are the skills I teach.

In my line of work, I think the more I get people questioning what they think they already know about others (including me) and the more I get them engaging in honest dialogue to learn about each other, the better I think I'm doing.

It also doesn't hurt that a main focus of my work is helping people "address the elephant in the room" by giving them the tools to step up to potentially challenging conversations and manage them successfully.  I'm a firm believer in the idea that you can talk with anyone about anything as long as you have the skills and language to do it in the right way.  Getting people to agree on politics...well, that's another thing.
