Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with friends, family, and delicious food. A new year always brings a feeling of excitement and anticipation, and we have a lot of ‘new’ things to celebrate here at the ACWL-Nuveen! We are kicking off 2023 with a new exhibition – Studio Art Showcase – which opens today. This exhibit features artwork by ACWL-Nuveen artist teachers and their students, and explores a wide variety of mediums. We’ll be hosting a closing reception for the exhibit on Saturday, January 21 from 1:00 – 3:00pm. Attendees will be invited to decorate lunch sacks for Kids Food Basket. The colorful sacks will be filled by Kids Food Basket with nutritious food then distributed to local children in need. I hope you’ll make a point to stop by! |

We’re also really looking forward to our second exhibit of the year – Human/Nature featuring works by Tatsuki Hakoyama. Sponsored by Eastbrook Homes, this is our first of three Guest Exhibitions of 2023. We got to know Tatsuki (aka Taz) when he served as a Mentor Artist of Color for the 2022 Emerging Artist of Color Residency, and we can’t wait to show off his artwork! This exhibit will open on January 27 and be up through March 11, with a reception and artist discussion on Friday, February 3. Taz will also be teaching two workshops while his show is on display – Papermaking: Painting with Pulp and Oil Landscape Painting. To learn more about Taz, his artwork, and the upcoming show, check out this video interview created by ACWL-Nuveen Marketing and Events Coordinator Ian Martin. Alongside inspiring new exhibitions, we have a full schedule of classes for you to stretch your creative muscles. I’m especially excited about some new jewelry classes taught by Casey Bemis, the first of which - Crocheting with Wire - will be held later this month. We’re also bringing back the extremely popular Watercolor for All class taught by John Herron. This class filled up so quickly last time, we already have two on the schedule for March! And for the first time in over two years, Kathy Rogers will be teaching classes for adults and young children to enjoy side by side. Look for those classes with ‘Together’ in the title! To see the full schedule of January – April classes, visit our website. We are also welcoming three new board members this month! Carolyn Carmel, Ann Kraus, and Kanda Parrott. All three of these talented women are artists and entrepreneurs, and I know they’ll be a great asset to our board. I hope you’ll take a moment to read this article to learn more about these impressive women! And if you’re interested in getting more involved in the ACWL-Nuveen, please check out this article highlighting where we could use your volunteer help! Cheers to a new year and to fresh new ways to engage with and appreciate the beauty of our community. See you soon! Erin |
