Newsletter December 5, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

There is something so wholesome and good about connecting well with people around you. Original 'Sesame Street' member, Bob McGrath z"l, died this week after dedicating his life over 47 season of the show to teaching children how to create healthy communities that appreciated each person's contributions to the whole-- he famously performed the song, "People in Your Neighborhood" (see it HERE).

The popular Jewish song, Hinei Ma Tov, comes from Psalm 133 and echos this sentiment. It affirms how good and pleasant it is when people dwell together. Only, it uses the Hebrew word for brother instead of "people," hinting at the idea that humanity has the power to affirm love and create communities of care in neighborhoods.

To have great neighbors, that is a huge blessing. To see the same old familiar faces walking by with their dogs or waving hello from their porches. There's a sense that we are each looking out for each other and here to help if anyone needs an extra hand or extra cup of sugar. See THIS article to read about plenty of benefits to being neighborly.

Just this week, in fact, I helped a neighbor find an Amazon package that had been delivered to the wrong house, and attended a neighborhood holiday party. 'Tis the season! But truly, it is always the season to share pleasant greetings and extend a helping hand to those who live nearby. You never know how much a simple wave may mean to the person you encounter; indeed it may be the only interaction they have all day. And even if it isn't, it makes us all feel more connected.

Being a good neighbor is an expression of love as Leviticus reminds us to "love your neighbor as yourself." That means we should create the environment around us that we want to live in. And, in a globalized society, that doesn't have to stop at the end of your street! Humanity has organized itself into cities, countries, and international communities. Like Keeping It Sacred. We may live 12 time zones away, but we are no less able to be neighborly and to extend kindness and care for one another.

That's how together, as a community, we're #keepingitsacred...

THE LONGEST NIGHT

December 21st is recognized as the National Homeless Persons' Memorial day. It takes place on The Winter Solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere sinks into its deepest point of darkness creating the longest night of the year.

Please join us to honor our lost neighbors with a candlelight memorial which includes interfaith prayers and verses, sacred and secular music and the reading of their names.

This interfaith memorial is dedicated to those who died in Orange County, CA. without a permanent, safe or secure place to call home. This may be the only memorial that these brothers and sisters will receive. As we honor these neighbors, we cannot ignore the fact that their deaths, on our Orange County streets, emergency shelters and local hospitals were all too often the direct result of the lack of adequate housing, safety and security, food, and health care.

We commit ourselves to raising public awareness about the plight of the homeless. Please learn more at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-longest-night-2022-ocs-homeless-persons-memorial-tickets-419729591507

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
