Wildlife Corner

Living with wildlife in our community comes with both privileges and dangers, particularly during calving season.

It is crucial to give these animals the space they need to thrive. Young calves require time to build strength to evade predators.

If you encounter a young calf, step away and leave it alone. They do not need our help, and human interference can negatively impact their survival rates.

Swimming Pools

The Design Review Board recently made adjustments to the language regarding swimming pools in Eagle Ranch. The adjustment now allows for the installation of Seasonal Above-Ground Swimming Pools.

The Executive Board is requesting community feedback on this change as these temporary seasonal structures were not previously contemplated.

Feedback will be accepted for 30 days. The survey will close at 5PM, August 2.

Composting in Eagle

What is Composting?

Composting is a controlled process that converts organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil amendment or mulch through natural decomposition.

Composting is just one way to create a new resource from our waste and to support the Town's Net Zero goals. Composting keeps food out of our landfills, where breaks down without oxygen and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to local air pollution.

What can be composted?

Composting Tips:

  • Create a Slick Surface: Spray the inside of your can with cooking spray so the contents don't stick.

  • Reduce the smelliness:

    • Add paper products: place shredded paper, sawdust, or cardboard in the bottom of your bin

    • Freeze your compost until pickup day

    • Use BPI certified compostable bags or paper bags to contain your compost

How does food waste get composted?

All food scraps collected in your curbside compost bins (or events throughout our community) are transported to Vail Honeywagon's composting facility in Wolcott. Items are buried in large piles of carbon-rich material, like yard waste and wood chips. The food waste is broken down naturally, reaching temperatures of 135 degrees as the food degrades into soil, effectively killing any harmful bacteria. The piles are turned every two weeks to ensure proper breakdown. Water is applied to the piles to enable the best environment for decomposition. It takes 4-6 months for each pile to become finished compost. The final step is ensuring that no large pieces of woodchips, food waste, or compostable materials remain.

Pick up your free compost!

Finished compost acts like fertilizer, providing a natural solution for garden beds, flower boxes, and house plants. Just sprinkle some on top or mix it into t first layer of soil. When watering your plants, the water will pick up those nutrients on its way through the soil and carry them to the roots of your plants.

Finished compost is available at the Town's yard waste site (311 Violet Lane), while supplies last. The site is open Fridays - Sundays, 12-4pm. Please bring a copy of your waste bill with you.
