Eat it Before it Melts

Kayla May

9 to 26 March 2023

A bite of our favorite childhood ice cream transports each of us to a unique and ephemeral place. From a Bubble O’Bill on the beach to a Gaytime in grandma's backyard. Ice cream dripping down your hand is a reminder of times passed and an urgent call to the present, to eat it before it melts.

Summertime

Saville Coble

1 to 18 March 2023

This is a vision of summertime, but not one you have seen before.

With this unique project, Saville Coble takes us on a personal journey that stretches from the ever changing chaos of city beaches to the peaceful and serene seaside towns of Victoria. From bustling urban shores to wild and rugged seascapes of the southern peninsula, it is a personal snapshot of a Victorian summer from many viewpoints.

This time, this place.

Mat Hughes

1 to 18 March 2023

We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home.

Australian Aboriginal Proverb

This body of work comprises of ten handmade prints. Working with traditional large format cameras, compositions are exposed on sheet film. Hughes' practice bridges traditional and digital technologies. These works have been printed using the Van Dyke Brown process patented in 1895. Paper is coated by hand with light sensitive emulsion, exposed, developed, toned with gold, and finally finished with a beeswax polish.

Nagar / नगर / Town

Anu Kumar

to 26 Feb 2023

Nagar - meaning Town in Hindi - is the culmination of close to ten years of making images in my birthplace of Kavi Nagar, India.

I returned to Kavi Nagar when I was 21 years old. I remember a feeling of discomfort; not knowing my place or who I was in that context. I began taking photos as an exercise in learning how to be Indian.

The images, made during daily 4pm walks with my Aunts, represent a starting point; a visual journal articulating my curiosity, responding to Kavi Nagar’s daily eccentricities whilst hovering around my family as they would move throughout the day. Over the course of this decade long journey of taking photographs, Nagar mapped my growing comfort and paved the way for a deeper connection with my family and heritage.

This Map links the Collingwood, Fitzroy and Carlton area. Note check what time the spaces are open before leaving.

Off the Well Worn Path

Ryley Clarke

21 Feb - 4 May 2023

A few months ago, my mother sold her childhood home. It’s been an overwhelming and exhausting journey to clear the place. Originally built by my Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother, over time it has quietly decayed away. Once loved, the dust took over. Books, unopened boxes, and hoarded objects filled the rooms and hallways.

Restoring a place that is filled with so many memories, bright and dark, melancholic and vibrant, has tested my mother’s perseverance. Despite that, in the midst of a pandemic, the devotion I witnessed to give this home some kind of new meaning in its next life has made her true strengths shine. And I couldn’t be prouder.

Radical Utopia

21 Feb - 27 May 2023

Melbourne in the 1980s was the site for new ideas to emerge, bend and transform the city, making its mark in post-modern design and media. Radical Utopia: an archaeology of a creative city explores the ways design and activism shaped the innovative cultural city we know today.

Radical Utopia focuses on the studios, places, and spectacles of Melbourne where design was fiercely debated and produced. Surveying nightclubs, fashion parades, architecture media, gaming labs, graphic design collectives and everything in-between, Radical Utopia provides a map of the cultural infrastructure of the city and inner suburbs

Narelle Autio

to 9 March 2023

A multi-award winning photographer, Narelle Autio's artistic career spans more than 30 years and portrays Australia's quintessential connection to nature.

In 2002 she became the first Australian to win the internationally-recognised Leica Oskar Barnack Award for her 'The Coastal Dwellers' photo series, in which her signature use of saturated colour and intense light on film so eloquently portrayed Australia's emblematic beach culture.

Tours de Force: Entertainers on the Front Line

to October 2023

Since the Vietnam War, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations. Their talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad.

In this special exhibition, stories, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours.

Tech School Exhibition

until 2023

To celebrate 150 years of public education in Victoria, we're shining a spotlight on the institutions that have provided young people with vocational training and hands-on learning since the late 19th century.

From bootmaking to cyborg physiology, we delve into the fascinating history of technical education across Melbourne and the regions. The stories include an architect on a mission to banish darkness from the classroom, the domestic studies college seeking to elevate the art of folding laundry and love letters thrown across the divide known as 'no man's land' at Preston Tech.

Tech School brings together stunning archival photographs, sourced from Public Record Office Victoria’s collection, alongside original documents and hand-painted building plans.

Through the lenses of over 50 artists, 100 faces brings together 100 works drawn from three photographic collections to explore the portrait in its many forms, as well as what it means to collect portraiture both publicly and privately.

This exhibition draws from two private Melbourne collections, belonging to the Harris and Rosenthal families. Works from these collections have been placed in conversation with our significant public collection to reveal a rich diversity of faces. From celebrities and cultural figures to anonymous individuals caught unawares on the street, this exhibition features works by major Australian and international artists.

Weather: Nature's Beauty and Fury

Various

to 29 April 2023

This will be much more than just an exhibition of sunrises and sunsets, although I'm sure there will be a few of those. It is about showing nature at its best and worst, from early morning fog or the beauty of the rainbow, to floods, droughts, storms, dust storms, lightning and all manner of wild weather.

As Ansel Adams once famously said: "There is no such thing as bad weather for photography. Only different weather."

THE LIGHT FADES BUT THE GODS REMAIN

BILL HENSON

11 March to 25 June 2023

The light fades but the gods remain is a major exhibition showcasing two key series by Bill Henson, one of Australia’s most eminent artists. These explore the suburb of Glen Waverley, where the artist grew up. In celebration of MGA’s 25th anniversary, Henson was commissioned to revisit the suburb of his childhood and to produce a new body of work reflecting upon his earlier series Untitled 1985–86, known by many as ‘the suburban series’. This ground-breaking commission offers an unparalleled insight into one of Australia’s most revered artists as he explores the notion of home, intensifying the everyday to a point of dramatic revelation and romantic beauty.
