Peer Into the Sky on New Year’s Eve

Why not kick off your New Year’s Eve activities with something totally different?  Vicky Derksen and the Sky Dudes will join the SCFH to lead a hike in the McDowell Mountain Preserve on Saturday, Dec. 31 from 6:30 to 8pm during the first quarter moon.  The Preserve will be closed to all but this group and it’s an amazing place to be at night!  If you’re not able to attend on Dec. 31, we will offer the same sky viewing opportunity on Fri., Dec. 2 from 6:30 to 8pm.

There is no charge for the events, but registration is required at scfh.org/events.

Choose How You Take on November Hiking Challenge

The Town of Fountain Hills and the SCFH are teaming up to offer a new spin on the annual November Challenge by providing several options!  There will be a Short and Easy Challenge (with five hikes shorter than two miles) and a Long & Moderate Challenge (with six hikes ranging from 2.6 to 10 miles).  Also new for those who like to hike with others is the opportunity to complete the Challenge with a Group.

Participants should carefully read and observe requirements for the amount of food and water to bring on Group hikes as well as equipment suggestions.  No dogs on Challenge with a Group hikes, please.

You can register for the November Challenge now!  The Town’s new registration system is live at www.FountainHillsAZ.gov/Rec.  Those who have not used the new registration system will need to go through the registration process and create an account.  When done, click Adult Activities and scroll to Outdoor Activities for the full listing of events, or you can go to scfh.org/events and click on any of the events listed to register.

As with previous years, all participants who register will receive a t-shirt and then can also register for challenge hikes guided by the SCFH.  A $15 registration fee is required.  And, if you share your pictures taken during Challenge hikes, you could win a $50 gift card to Just Roughin’ It and Fountain Hills swag.

Trailblazers Returning to the Trails in November

The Trailblazers, who build and maintain the hiking trails starting at the Adero Canyon Trailhead, along with the Lake Overlook trail and the FH Desert Botanical Garden, will begin their season on Saturday, Nov. 5.  The Trailblazers meet most Saturday mornings and occasionally on weekdays.  They will begin the season by doing maintenance on all of the trails and then return to working on the new North Leg trail, which was started late last season.

As you’re out hiking, please remember that all of the trails in the FH system have been built by volunteers whose hard work and dedication provide us with the recreational opportunities we enjoy so much.  And if you happen to see the Trailblazers working, they always appreciate our kind words of support and appreciation for their efforts.
