Announcing the publication of A Splendid Sin by Alana Bolton Cooke |
Cloud Ink is excited to announce Alana Bolton Cooke’s debut novel, A Splendid Sin will be launched Tuesday April 16 at Dear Reader (bookshop in Surrey Cres, Grey Lynn), 6.30pm. A Splendid Sin explores the life and loves of the famous artist Michelangelo. |
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarrotti has risen into Rome's artistic elite, and the ailing Pope Clement commissions him to paint The Last Judgement. When the artist apprentices Tomasso, a young nobleman, to be his muse and inspiration, Michelangelo must contend with the conflict between his growing love and his fear of eternal damnation. Can Michelangelo hide his feelings from both the church and himself, or will The Last Judgement destroy him? |

Alana worked as a Registered Nurse in New Zealand and England. After marrying she went to live in Christchurch New Zealand. As a mature student she completed a BA Hons and MA in English Literature. Later she completed a Master of Creative Writing at AUT, writing a novel about the War of the Spanish Succession (the Battle of Blenheim and the Duke of Marlborough) called The Sword and the Sun. |

NZ author resources for schools and book clubs |
Currently, we're collating some resources for use in secondary schools and book clubs. Thank you to Tanja Spaabaek who has written the first Noteworthy Study Guide for Beneath Pale Water by Thalia Henry. The guide is downloadable from our website, here. Tanja is also currently working on a second study guide for Helen McNeil's A Striking Truth. Tanja has a Master of Professional Studies in Education and has previously been a secondary teacher at Rangitoto College where she was Teacher in Charge (TIC) of Level 3 English. She has also worked at Orewa College. We believe it is important to encourage and support the reading of New Zealand authored books in secondary schools. The New Zealand Society of Authors notes in this article: NZSA Submission to Tomorrow's Schools Review "that NCEA examiners frequently comment on the lack of recently published New Zealand literature in external examination scripts" and that the organisation is working "closely with other literary arts organisations, government and Creative New Zealand to ensure that the professional interests of writers are strongly represented." Keep an eye on our website as study guides, supplementary resouces and book club resources become available for free download in the coming months. Also, if you are a secondary English teacher "the NZ Society of Authors (PEN NZ Inc) Te Puni Kaituhi o Aotearoa has collated an advisory list NZ Texts for Secondary English. This list has been gathered from NZ publishers and is listed by reading level, theme (e.g. coming of age, dystopia) and includes important links to teachers’ resources." This list will be distributed to schools and updated annually. |
