Help Us to Help Them!

After being exonerated, they face a whole new set of challenges unknown to most of us. It begins with walking out with no money, sometimes no place to stay, no ID, the list goes on and on. Some have supportive families but sometimes they have no one. Many times they have been in prison so long, their loved ones have passed away.

In 2018, each of these individuals has received $500 or $800 as soon after being released as possible. This met a tangible and timely need. In each case, their gratitude was beyond what they could express.

Who knows how many will be exonerated in 2019? Help PI meet the challenge of giving these individuals something they can call their own by including PI in your year-end giving. Recurring donations are an extra blessing to us!

A message from Errol Liverpool, President of Proving Innocence:

In this season of joy and festivities, we are thankful for many things. The family of Proving Innocence is grateful for the support we have received over the years.

Your donations, time, and efforts in advocating for the wrongfully convicted cannot be overemphasized. However, amidst this atmosphere of gratitude and celebration, we cannot forget the many who are still incarcerated for crimes they never committed. We cannot forget those for whom the flow of time grinds like an ancient olive press powered by an unhappy and unenthusiastic beast of burden.

It is said, that the wheels of justice turn slowly, and while this may be so, I would posit that the wheels of injustice would come in a very distant second in a race with a tortoise.  Let us not forget the many who are languishing in the dark cells of confinement, while we enjoy the light of autonomy, liberty and self-determination.

As we approach 2019, it is incumbent upon us to engage in retrospection, introspection and projection. That is, no matter how challenging, we should see the benefits of looking back, looking within, and looking ahead. As imperfect people, we no doubt may have some regrets about things we set out to do, but were unable to accomplish. However, while memory may be filled with the facts of our failures, hope is filled with optimism. As one famous politician reminded us, “yes, we can.”

As president of Proving Innocence, I am confident that our best efforts are ahead of us, and we look forward to a year when more men and women would find freedom from the prisons of the wrongfully convicted.

An excerpt from a moving, heart-felt message from
Fred Freeman, an innocent man, about to spend his
32nd Christmas in Prison!

To my friends and supporters:

So how do I properly thank all of you? These mere words from my prison cell seem so insufficient to the task, but they are all I have to give you right now.  And so, I pray they will do until the day that I can personally communicate with you, perhaps speak with you or meet you, shake your hand, perhaps give you a great hug and tell you what you have done for me with your kind words and encouragement.

I am still learning every day. It is easy to become bitter in this empty place of despair and disappointment, of violence and anger and hate and hollowness, but time and again I have seen the very best of humanity rise up and it invigorates me like a shot of adrenaline!

You are, all of you, that shining beacon that guides me through the fog and the night. You are that shot of adrenaline! You befriended me when you knew me not and how could I do less for others or for any of you?

I could NOT and so, I want each and every one of you, to know how very, very much I appreciate YOU; who you are both inside and out; what you have done for me; what you have given me and what you have taught me. Even something as simple as a "post" or a kind word to me or through others speaks volumes about your heart and about who we were meant to be.

Thank you for being you. Thank you for being who you were meant to me. And thank you for reminding me who I am supposed to be and for setting an example we all should live by.

My Wish for Every One of You is Simple and Sincere. That You All Be Blessed, Happy, Healthy and Whole and no matter your Faith, your Culture or Beliefs, your History or your Life-Path, May this be for You and Yours, the Most Wonderful Season and Coming New Year and the Beginning of Something Grand and Wonderful for All of Earth and All of Mankind. With so many Amazing, Selfless and Caring People, how could we ever fail?

Fred "Mickey" Freeman
Prisoner #189355
