May 2023 Newsletter

MMBTN Executive Director

Susan Campbell, MD

May is a special month. It is a time where we honor all mothers. Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee would not exist without mothers willing to donate their breastmilk. I am continuously in awe of our amazing donor moms. I am delighted to share three special stories from three donor moms in this issue. With the hard work and dedication of our donor moms, we are helping more Tennessee babies survive and thrive each day.

May also marks World NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis) Awareness Day on May 17. NEC is a leading cause of infant death, impacting thousands of babies every year. I have seen the devastating impact this intestinal disease can have on babies born prematurely or medically fragile throughout my career as a neonatologist. One of our featured donor moms, Dr. Stephanie Attarian, is also a neonatologist and will share more about NEC and how breastmilk plays a significant role in helping prevent this disease.

This leads me to another important day to recognize. May 19 is World Human Milk Donation Day. This global event promotes the importance of donating human milk to nonprofit human milk banks like ours. Thank you for supporting MMBTN!

 International Bereaved Mother's Day

The first Sunday in May is International Bereaved Mother's Day. It is a day dedicated to honoring mothers who have lost a child. In 2022, 11 selfless and heroic mothers donated their breastmilk to Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee after the loss of their baby. In honor of International Bereaved Mother's Day, we are honored to have Autumn Patrick share her story with us. We hope each reader will be encouraged and inspired by her and her son's story.
