Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hello all of you beautiful people out there receiving our newsletter. This month we're doing something a little different, we are dedicating a good portion of our newsletter to breast cancer topics, in light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As you may know, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign held to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. I am sure nearly all of you have been touched by breast cancer in some way, whether it be personally or through the experience of a family member, friend, or co-worker.

According to Canadian breast cancer researcher, Dr Halls, breast cancer is the most common cancer of women worldwide and is the leading cause of cancer death in underdeveloped regions. In more developed parts of the world, survival rates are better than in less developed areas. These high case fatality rates in under developed areas are likely due to a lack of awareness of the benefits of detection and treatment and lack of facilities for such - as well as poor access to primary treatment.

An important reason we support Women-based fair trade artisan groups in particular, is because, when women are employed in fair trade environments, they often have access to literacy workshops and nutrition, which in turn helps build the skills and confidence needed to participate in their communities. A fair living wage can help open the door for women and their families to have better access to medical treatment and education.

Note: Marigold Collective is donating 10% of all online sales between now and October 31st to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

We are pleased to tell you about an amazing woman from our community who is doing some very important work around breast cancer research, Dr. Sandi Dunn.

Sandi has been researching breast cancer for over 27 years and served as a board member for the BC/Yukon region of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. She also taught at the UBC Faculty of Medicine for nearly 15 years before founding Pheonix Molecular Designs in 2012. In 2015, Sandi became CEO of Pheonix and has been featured on the Forbes 50 Over 50 - Vision 2021 list.

Pheonix was created after her lab identified a new way to treat one of the most aggressive kinds of breast cancer. They are working to change the outcomes for women with breast cancer by developing a selective drug to attack the cancer cells in a way that has never been done before. Sandi's team believes their therapies can assist with treating over 14 other kinds of cancer, along with children with rare brain tumors.

Big kudos to you and your team, Sandi! To learn more about Sandi's work in the breast cancer research space, check out her Q&A style article below:
