Let's Grow Together!

HSOK Tower Garden Program

HSOK wants to build a network of tower garden schools to provide students, faculty and community with healthy food and nutrition education to create lifelong healthy habits.

UPCOMING

Please plan to attend a virtual training in November or early December.  Date is TBD.  We will take you through the basics of using a tower garden and easy ways to maintain it.

Be on the lookout for monthly videos that cover maintenance, sustainability, activities, etc.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Replinish mineral blend and check PH balance weekly.  Assign one day a week to do this to keep your plants growing!

ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH

Assign a plant to each class. This gives students ownership and allows them to track progress. If you are doing virtual learning, you can share pics and videos of your plants. Students can track growth, journal, learn about the health benefits, etc..

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

Lone Grove Elementary is growing kale, spinach, swiss chard and lettuce. They use it for nutrition lessons. This year they are posting pics on their PE Facebook page and sharing on the screen in class.

When they first began their tower garden, they had so much kale, lettuce and swiss chard leftover after every student tasted it that they gave it to their cafeteria to make salads, They plan to do the same again this year!
