Countdown for Barrier Installation has begun!!!

Dear Lisa,

The last 8 weeks have been a busy time for the Half Moon Bay Sargassum project team…let us give you a quick update!

THE BIG NEWS!! – the order has been placed for the barrier!  We have been working on the contract with the barrier manufacturer to get the best terms possible to protect your money and make sure the barrier arrives on time and as ordered.  The selected manufacturer is Okeanis, who has also provided barriers to Vidanta and Paradisus in the region.  Manufacturing has begun, and updates will be provided to you along the way!  Time to manufacture the barrier is 60-75 days, and the estimated transportation time from the factory in Bulgaria to the Progreso port in Mexico is between 40 and 60 days.

MID-APRIL!  Allowing for customs and transport to Akumal, we are targeting installing the barrier by mid-April, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

PRE-INSTALLATION ACTIVITIES – a team of divers has been engaged to install the first 10 rod anchors and to test a number of cost saving procedures for both installing and operating the barrier starting at the end of this month.  Beginning this process now will allow us to streamline and perfect the procedures before the full installation of the rest of the anchors in January (total of 60), and before the barrier arrives, saving us time and money.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT are being located and procured from the most economical sources possible, some from the US, some locally sourced.  We are working on ways to make inspecting the barrier easier and less expensive, including using drone equipment for easy visual inspection of the barrier.

LEGAL STUFF is being properly attended to, including obtaining an RFC number for EPA (Ecoproteccion Akumal), the Mexican company formed to sign contracts on behalf of the residents who have donated.  We have also made arrangements with a Mexican non-profit to handle tax-deductible donations made in pesos.  Attorneys have been involved in the contract process between Okeanis and EPA, and will be involved in other contracts signed for other services such as logistics, installation and maintenance.  All of this work has been going on behind the scenes, in order to protect your investment and the integrity of the entire project.

If you haven’t donated to this project, we would love to talk to you and answer your questions.  Please check out the donation page at www.hmbsargassumproject.com/donate for more information on how to send in your contribution.  It takes a village – Akumal Norte – to protect our beaches, our residents, staff and guests, and our turtles!  Please be a part of the solution by sending in a donation.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the members of the community who have sent in their donations and have given their support to this massive community project.  The members of the HMB Sargassum committee are so grateful to  everyone who has supported this effort!

Our work continues, and we will be sending you updates as to the progress of the manufacturing, the anchoring, and the rest of the project through the coming weeks.  Stay tuned!

Gratefully yours,

YOUR HMB Sargassum Committee
