CAGE BALL LEAGUE FINALS!

What a climatic finish to the first Sport Ready Cage Ball League! Well done to all our Seniors & Elites who participated. We got a few words of commentary on the action from our coaches...

Radium v. Titanium: Set up to be a great final with these two team always having a great battle. Could Radium overturn the round robin results?
Mia had some good defensive intercepts and positioning at D, disrupting some of Titanium’s speed. Titanium's speed through court has been one of the consistent features of their play throughout the league, and they showed no signs of slowing last night. Their defensive effort was also strong, as they made it incredibly hard for Radium to hit the circle edge to get the 2 point opportunities for the CA. Whilst the game remained relatively close throughout with teams exchanging 1 and 2 pointers alike, Zara nailed at least 7-8 2 pointers in the final quarter, and although Lucy tried to stop the onslaught with a string of her own 2 pointers, the damage had been done and the score blew out to a 40-28 win for Titanium. Congratulations girls, a brilliant final, and only fitting that these 2 teams were a part of it.

Copper v. Nickel: The battle of Coach Sid’s teams. Copper started strong and took the lead 5-3. They were getting some great passes into the circle, and securing the shots under the post. Copper were patient in attack throughout the whole game, and kept slowly plugging away at their opposition. Nickel’s height was proving disruptive as they were able to get some tips and turnovers from their strong 3 feet defending over the ball. Minnie lead her team once again in attack with some great passing and driving, as well as securing the points under the post. There was more noise than I’d heard before from both teams, well done!

Mercury v. Zinc: The game started off a little quiet and tentative. I think there were a few nerves as this was the Bowl Final. Mercury put the first points on the board, but scoring was slow in the first quarter as 2 point attempts weren’t hitting the mark, and nerves meant there were a few changes of possession. However, once the girls warmed into the game there was real spark and fight on this court. Both Coach Nurul and Coach Gillian had come to support their teams, and there was lots of noise from coaches and players, cheering each other on and getting into the spirit of the game. The 2 pointers started to come off in the second half and the match picked up it’s intensity. Mercury had great ball speed through court, and Kohana shot some great goals from distance. However, Zinc’s composure and team work paid off and they were able to turn a 3/4 time score of 20-18 to Mercury into a 26-22 win. Congratulations girls, such a brilliant game!

Krypton v Silver: A solid start from both teams with both Gabrielle and Jessica Cunningham scoring the 1 point shots, and securing points for there team. Gabrielle also scored a 2 pointer which boosted her teams confidence. Once again I saw great vision from both Carina and Poppy in their attacking play, being able to open up space for their team mates away from the towering arms of their Krypton opponents. The momentum constantly shifted in the game with both teams not giving up. Sadly for Silver, it was Kryptons strong line up of positions in quarter 2 that saw the game move out of their reach. Great display of team work tonight, congratulations!

Gallium v Platinum: Much like many of the other games last night there were loads of 2 pointers from all players on court. The ones I saw - Holly, Sophie, Amber, Rose, Ruby! Great effort girls. You could see this was a game of pride for both teams, as there was a lot of competitiveness from all of the girls. Lily and Holly were tussling on the floor for a ball, in fact Holly was in amongst all of the tussles on court last night! Gallium continued to show their work on through-court, with nice fast, flat balls. Platinum also showed their speed through court, but there were a few risky cross courts that made me not want to look! Great atmosphere on this court too, with cheers of support from the scorers and supporters. Congratulations girls.

Argon v. Gold: Well if the result was based on the last quarter I would’ve said that Argon had this game. They were not only scoring from their centre passes, but were making their turnover ball count as well. Gold looked to be a little rattled and made the same errors a few times in a row, trying to throw the ball too high and then rebound off the net working to Argon’s favour. Both Sunny and Anja took advantage of the height mismatch with their opponents, making sure that Argon continued the fight back as best they could. Luckily for Gold they had managed to build up a buffer in the 2nd quarter, which took the game away from Argon somewhat. Both teams had great communication and support for each other. I could hear words of encouragement, and players trying to lift their team mates to maintain the intensity through the 4 quarters of the game. Olivia D was getting stuck in to both her attacking and defensive duties, and bringing some urgency into Gold’s play. In the end Gold came out winners 26-21. Another brilliant game. Well done teams!
