So I live in Nebraska.

Is there corn?

Yes there is.

Is there anything else?

...well, that's part of my quest.

Seth and I love hiking! The only way to hike here is by walking through a field -

So we did!

We were away from all the noise of roads/cars, totally surrounded by grass and butterfly milkweed.

I still prefer the mossy waterfalls of Washington... But Seth reminded me: "You can't ask a plain to do a mountain's job."

Plains have special jobs, and a special beauty too.

The contract is signed and the book is announced! I'll be illustrating a book by Harshita Jerath called COOLER THAN LEMONADE!

I feel like I'm in a dream - I've been working furiously toward getting published for 2 years now, and here I am! Ahhhh!!

(PLUS, there may or may not be other books in the works?!! Double Ahhh!!)

Sketches are not quite ready to share for my book, so here's a promotional piece I made recently:

It's a dream of mine to illustrate a Middle Grade novel cover.

It's another dream of mine to meet these characters in real life because LOOK AT THEM.

The tall blonde one is inspired by middle school me.

I'm especially proud of the type on this one. Hopefully this piece will get me a cover job!!

What's the story about?... Well, that's the beauty of a portfolio piece i make up.

I HAVE NO IDEA.

Okay, I bought this book because Jacqueline Woodson wrote it.

(huge deal)

I LOVE this book because it still makes me tear up.

The main character is having trouble sharing her story for many reasons. Some I relate to, some are outside of my lived experience.

The moment she does share, magic ensues. Also I begin to cry.

I heard Jacqueline speak at my first-ever children's book conference (here in Nebraska! Not until afterwards did I realize her famousness!! Ahh!). While onstage, she read this book to us. She pointed out her favorite things the illustrator did with her story - which just gives me goosebumps (collaboration is probably the #2 reason I love my job. Drawing is #1).

Rafael added collaged-in rulers throughout the story, because the main character was constantly measuring herself according to others. How thoughtful and cool is that??

I'm spending October drawing secret projects, (COUGHsecondbookdeal??)

setting up my new studio space,

and trying not to loose Pencil in a cornfield.

See you next month.
