Academy Caller

a newsletter for our academy community

December 4, 2020

Dear Academy community,

This first caller of December, with snow in the forecast!  I also love seeing how our school routines change with the seasons; snow pants, forts on the playground, huge piles of snow, wet hallways after recess.  These are all things I look forward too as the year progresses, with the added element this year of scooping out our many fire pits in the woods.

I think I speak for many of us here at the school that this week has been challenging in light of the recent governor’s orders limiting social gatherings during the time when we feel the need to gather the most.  I’d like to extend a deep heartfelt thank you to those of you who are making sacrifices to keep our entire community safe and healthy and able to continue to be in school.  In addition, please also know that nobody knows your family circumstances better than you, and we will support you and your students without reservation in the event that you need to quarantine.  We ask that you continue to be open with your communication with us in the office, your teachers or Nurse Amy, and we will all continue to thrive as a healthy learning community.

As the winter goes on, many of our classes will continue to spend significant time outside.  If you are in need of winter gear - hats, gloves, snow pants, jackets, boots - please reach out to Jody Mattulke (jmattulke@wsesdvt.org) who has collected a large stock of items to share with students and families.

Looking ahead, please take note of our plan related to the work needed to update our air handling system.  This work will begin on Monday December 14th, and continue until the Holiday break.  This work will necessitate the following closures of parts of our building.  As a result:

  • The week of December 14th - 18th - ALL students in grades 4-6 will be fully remote (with their regular teacher)

  • The week of December 21st - 23rd - ALL students will be fully remote (with their regular teacher)

Please note that Wednesday, December 23rd is a school day, with our typical enrichment offerings being offered that day.

As we progress towards the second half of the school year, please look for information regarding plans for the second half of the year coming from Superintendent Andy Skarzynski soon.  Kelly and I are always available for questions or concerns, so please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you again for sharing the young people in your lives with us,

Jon

Soxy is missing all of her Academy friends and is patiently waiting for the day that she can be back in the school building again visiting with students and staff.  She is especially looking forward to meeting all the new students and staff members at Academy School!  She hopes everyone is staying safe and healthy.

BUTTER BRAID AND COOKIE DOUGH ORDER INFO

Hello K to 6th grade Academy Families -

It is time to start selling our Frozen Butter Braid and Cookie Dough Fundraiser.

Yes - I said K to 6th grades - the whole school will have the opportunity to sell these yummy treats this year to help our school earn money to fund our wonderful Winter Sports Program and Buy New Play Ground Equipment.

This Fundraiser will run from 11/9/2020 to 12/11/2020. All paper forms need to be returned to school by Friday 12/11/2020 to be entered into the computer system on time for delivery. Orders will be delivered to Academy on Thursday 12/17/2020, but then will need to be sorted before handing them out.

This year there are two different ways to sell this Butter Braid/Cookie Dough Fundraiser-

There will be the normal paper forms and this year we will also be able to sell online.

If you will be selling on a paper form PLEASE make sure to fill out the top of the form with your STUDENT'S NAME (first & last) and TEACHER.  If you are selling on the paper form and online PLEASE make sure the STUDENT'S NAME on the paper form matches the STUDENT'S NAME online, so I can match the two different orders up and get you

the right number of total orders.

To start selling online Go to: https://your.mcmfundraising.com/signup/BXX7

You will come to a page that says -

Participant Setup -

You will need to input your STUDENT'S first then last name - Teacher - Grade - Phone # - Email - Then choose a password to remember to get into your student's online sales page later to check on your student's online orders.

Once you are logged into the signup page, you should see your student's online site.

You can now go to the Customize Your Storefront on the left side of the screen -

make sure your student's name (first & last)

is right - You can upload to photo of your student if you wish - then a personal message that will be send to your customers.

Then go to Invite Buyers - Type in all the email addresses and Cell phone numbers of friends and family you wish to sell to. Then click continue and your personal message and your online store link will be sent to the addresses and phone numbers you entered.

If you then go to your student's Dashboard - you can click on different social media links, like Facebook to share your student's online store link on your social media pages.

If you have any questions or comments,

please feel free to put them here or

Happy Selling!

A little birdy told me we might get some snow this weekend. Looks like Mrs. Dias is getting a head start and playing in the snow. What is your favorite thing to do in the snow?

PROJECT FEED THE THOUSANDS

Every year Academy School participates in collecting food and personal items for Project Feed the Thousands. While we can't kick off this drive as we normally would, we are still collecting items. If you are able, please send your Academy Star to school with a non-perishable food item, or a personal item such as toothpaste or diapers, to help fill the shelves at our community food banks across the state. Items can be left in the designated bins inside the lobby or at the front door, up until December 17th. Thank you!

Mrs. Schultz's first graders spent an afternoon in the forest last week. First, we took a hike along the trail stopping to read Mrs. Parzych's owl research. Next, we did a leaves scavenger hunt. Then, we had a fire and sweet potatoes with Ms. Kathy. Finally, a little fun play in the forest! A great time was had by all!

Lots of different types of learning happening in Sarah Kaltenbaugh's 6th grade classroom.
