Mrs Nusrat Begum Ahmed from Stockport attends Queen Elizabeth II Garden Party |
Mrs Nusrat Begum Ahmed of Stockport (and Mother of our Director Nadeem) was invited to attend this year’s Queen’s Garden Party on Wednesday 11 May 22 after being nominated by the Lieutenant of Manchester for helping the elderly to understand the implications of COVID-19, the importance of the COVID vaccinations and how to keep safe for the elderly and vulnerable in our society. Mrs Ahmed was one of the first Ugandan Asian refugees to arrive in Manchester in September 1972 and as she could speak 5 different languages, literally four days after her arrival, she was asked by Manchester Council for Community Relations (MCCR) to meet Ugandan Asian refugees at Manchester Airport, assist them and to house them with families across Stockport and Manchester. Mrs Ahmed is the current General Secretary of All Pakistan Women’s Association (APWA) Greater Manchester an organisation she has been involved with since 1992. APWA is a voluntary women’s organisation which looks after the welfare of women and children in Pakistan through their work in Maternity hospitals, organising cultural functions, awareness events and fairs for the Pakistani communities in Greater Manchester. Mrs Ahmed’s career with Ethnic Diversity Service, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council lasted for 18 years prior to her retirement. Her role involved interpreting for parents, schools, hospitals, disabled persons, the prison service, and being actively involved in police monitoring boards, women suffering domestic abuse, marriage breakdowns/advice and more importantly in the field of education within the Asian communities of Stockport by encouraging them to learn English through formal qualifications (ESOL) for the betterment of women through educating themselves. She recruited over 400 women in Stockport to a Level 5 education standard. This resulted in women empowerment and employment for the Asian women of Stockport. Mrs Ahmed is known as a legend for her work with Asian women and is a well-respected member of the communities she has served over the last 40-plus years. |

And meeting face to face was a nice change from the weekly online learning hub which was set up to provide personal and professional development for 20 African women and girls in Stockport to enable them to thrive postpandemic. |

PETITION TO SIGNAbolish no recourse to public funds (NRPF) visa conditions |
NRPF leaves people unable to access benefits and housing assistance, forcing too many into destitution and unsafe situations. The Government should end this policy in order to reduce destitution, bring dignity to those in need, and as research strongly suggests, it would save the country money. A recent report (https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/scba-nrpf-policy-in-london) suggests that ending NRPF could result in societal gains of up to £872 million. Ending NRPF makes sense for everyone. |

GMVCO Grants to support GM based peer-led voluntary groups Grants are available to support Greater Manchester-based peer-led voluntary groups that can: Engage local parents (remotely or face to face), in a welcoming, safe and non-judgmental environment; where they access peer support, and socialise with and learn from other parents. Recruit/use volunteers with lived experience of perinatal stress; to offer valuable support to new parents and help ease the sense of isolation or overwhelm, often felt when new parents experience anxiety or feeling down, or that they can’t understand why they are ‘struggling’ with feeling anything other than joy. This type of support gives a sense of relief, and connection and also promotes coping strategies.
