The GloFouling Partnerships Project Coordination Unit (PCU) expresses sincere appreciation for all the contributions and support made towards the progress of the project, to address one of the greatest threats to marine biodiversity: aquatic invasive species introduced via ship’s biofouling. As we close another chapter in 2021 and look forward to greater achievements in 2022, below is an outline of our accomplishments and continuing activities. |

Indonesia, Jordan and the Philippines successfully deliver the training course on Biofouling Management |
The PCU designed the training course, "Introduction to Marine Biofouling: Impacts and Management of Risks" to be delivered online and onsite. To conduct the training course, the PCU and the respective countries identified and selected relevant national training institutions that specialize in marine aspects. |
The training sessions held at the designated training institutions, engaged participants representing national administration, port State control officers and other institutions to learn about the scientific, technical and regulatory aspects of biofouling management essential for the implementation of the national policy. |
Regional secretariats partners of the GloFouling project conduct raising awareness seminars online |
In 2021, online raising awareness regional seminars were organized by four Regional Coordination Organizations (RCOs), namely PEMSEA, PERSGA, SACEP and CPPS, with a view to increasing implementation of the IMO Biofouling Guidelines in their respective regions. All four RCOs agreed on the way forward to facilitate the adoption of harmonized national measures to prevent the transfer of invasive aquatic species. |

Global guides issued to help governments undertake national reforms to address bio invasions via ship’s biofouling |
The GloFouling PCU developed two useful global guides, namely, the Guide for developing National Status Assessments and National Strategies and Action Plans. The third guide, the National Economic Assessments will be finalized in the coming months. These guides will enable all GloFouling Lead Partnering Countries (LPCs) to identify their key national issues for biofouling management, policy priorities and plans for reforms. The global guides will be publicly made available for all to use. |

GloFouling Partnerships shed the light on GHG emissions savings from ship’s biofouling at COP 26 |
The GloFouling Partnerships project had a significant impact at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26), last November in Glasgow, UK. The Project hosted a side event as part of the official UNFCCC programme which showcased the full potential of ship’s biofouling management to curb Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. |
The encouraging preliminary results of the latest study commissioned by the GloFouling Partnerships Global Industry Alliance (GIA), unveiled during the event, clearly showed the importance of good biofouling management, in the case of tackling the build-up of microorganisms, plants, algae or animals which impacts a ship’s hydrodynamic drag, and subsequently increases GHG emissions. |
Look out for the final version of the report which will also feature newly developed research focused on analyzing the effect of currently available industry practices for biofouling management, such as the importance of selecting the most appropriate fouling control coating, hull cleaning, propeller polishing and the use of ultrasonic antifouling systems. Global Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety elects new Chair |
The first anniversary of the GIA coincided with a meeting of its GIA Task Force on 21 October 2021. Mr. Yusik Kim of TAS GLOBAL took over from Mr. Darren Jones from Sonihull as a new Chair to lead the GIA in its second year of existence. During 2021, the GIA commission two reports, one being the ‘Compilation and comparative analysis of existing and emerging standards and regulation related to ships’ biofouling’ and ‘Impact of Ships’ Biofouling on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions’. The GIA members defined a new work plan of activities for 2022, focusing more on the awareness-raising and educational aspects of the biofouling issue. The Project delivered eight webinars in 2021, under two themes ‘Science and Policy’ and ‘Innovation and Technologies’. All past webinars are available on-demand, click on the link to learn more about the webinars and watch the recording of each topic. Science and Policy Innovation and Technologies Our webinar series will continue through 2022 featuring a new programme of live demonstrations of in-water cleaning and monitoring technologies. Sustained outreach and communication efforts |
GloFouling Partnerships continues to engage with such a diverse network with industry executives, environmental groups, government officials and academia to promote and support the work on biodiversity conservation from international shipping. The GloFouling website increases daily visits and activities by users which also reflects the GloFouling LinkedIn page where it has now reached 1,145 followers who support and engage in our work. |

Upcoming GloFouling events |
The 2nd Global Project Task Force meeting of the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships project will take place from 11 to 13 April 2022, in IMO Headquarters, London. This meeting will bring together representatives from Lead Partnering Countries (LPCs), Regional Coordinating Centres (RCOs), as well as GEF-UNDP, implementing partners, the IMO Secretariat and Strategic Partners to review and discuss the project's implementation progress. One of the key aspects of the GloFouling project is to promote research and to encourage knowledge and technology-sharing in relation to biofouling management. The second GloFouling Research and Development Forum and Exhibition (the R&D Forum) is expected to take place tentatively from 11-14 October 2022 at IMO Headquarters, and it is considered one of the most important events in the field of knowledge and technology development related to ship’s biofouling. More information will be made available soon. Look out for ‘Call for Abstracts’ announcement on https://www.glofouling.imo.org/ |
