Playing in the Dirt

November 2023

First & foremost - I want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to each & everyone of you who supported the farm this year - the ones who cheered us on, made purchases, told me how beautiful the flowers were or that you enjoyed the newsletter, shared on social… all the things… I am full of gratitude. Because of you I continue to get to do something that makes my heart happy on a daily basis.

Next, on a very real note - I’m not going to gloss over the fact that Thanksgiving can be hard.  With all the hype around big meals, get togethers, and early holiday shopping, we can feel forced to enjoy the day. Yes, there are those people who bubble with excitement over all the turkey, family, football, etc, and if that’s you I commend you. However, there are those who don’t and I’m thinking about you. You may introverted and not overly excited about spending time at crowded holiday gatherings, or forced to hang with people that you otherwise do a good job at avoiding the rest of the year. Thanksgiving can include missing and reminiscing about those who are not with us, worrying that your loved ones will get home safely from out of town, and travel headaches. Plus, while you may know me as the flower lady, I’m also a health coach, and Thanksgiving can be the beginning of a very hard season for those who are struggling with any health or eating issues.

For myself, some of my major Thanksgiving memories include deaths in the family, a stressful scary Thanksgiving Day spent in the ER, being home all alone with a very sick contagious child, or the one with a broken stove (microwave Thanksgiving anyone?).

No matter what Thanksgiving is to you, I hope that you can honor this time, and yourself. Take a deep breath, take care of your mental health, & remember the blessings that you do have. It's OK to slow down just a bit like nature does in the fall.

Flowers & Greenery

It’s beginning to smell like Christmas around here!

The Holiday Shop is open. By request, we are offering limited wreaths & holiday arrangements beginning Dec 4th.

Please pre-order by Dec 1 if possible to help with our planning!

I’ve also spent time plotting, planning, prepping & playing at The Flower Barn RVA! They have a beautiful workshop space and have some Private Wreath Workshops coming up that I get to help with in December. I think they has some dates left, so if a private wreath workshop sounds like fun to you please reach out!  (I can’t get the link to work :/ but you can find them on FB & IG.)

Just because the flowers aren’t blooming doesn’t mean they aren’t available! I’m working my way thru the dried flowers to create everlasting bouquets, flower confetti & wreaths and updating the inventory as I go.

Need a unique gift this season for the person who has everything? Our 2024 flower subscriptions may be your answer!

Farm to Table

We will be processing the hogs this Friday. If you would be interested in fresh sausage, please email us or please click here.

Around the Farm

I get asked often “What do you do when the flowers aren’t blooming?”

I keep playing in the dirt!

This past month I cut down the beautiful dahlias, dug the tubers (it’s similar to digging potatoes), and then cured, divided and tucked them away to hibernate for the for winter like a bear.

I planted 1000’s of premium specialty bulbs. It should be beautiful around here again before I know it!  Since I plant the ranunculus & anemone crop in February, I prepped the beds so that planting in the cold will go as quick as possible. If you are as excited about these spring blooms as I am, our Premium Spring Flower Subscriptions are available.

Low tunnel row covers were installed where needed.  The tunnels offer protection to the plants, especially from the wind, but I find them very frustrating to say the least!  However, I’m trying some new tips & tricks this year and keeping my fingers crossed.

Outdoors, I also ‘flipped’ most of the beds. I pulled up annual flowers completely, and cut back the perennial flowers.  I also weeded where needed and added compost, leaf mulch, and/or seasoned wood chips depending on the area.

I’ve also started processing the luffa harvest. This involves peeling, washing & deseeding them.  Inventory will be updated sometime :)
