Being kind to all kinds is what we do here.

At Harmony Farm Sanctuary we work to provide lifelong safe haven for rescued farm animals. We also work to heal them.

Every farm animal is deserving of our kindness, compassion and care. And it's through their individual stories, that we raise awareness of a food system that is fundamentally oppressive to animals, people and the planet.

Did you know that right now, hundreds of millions of turkeys are living in deplorable conditions on factory farms waiting to be killed for the upcoming holiday season?? Most killed at just 5 months old.

Because of this, farm animals rarely live to see old age. These animals only walk this earth for a short period time.

There are roughly 10 billion land animals slaughtered for food in the United States each year. Most are killed at a fraction of their natural lifespan.

At HFS we give them the opportunity to defy these limitations. We strive to provide quality, individualized care and love, so that they have the chance to reach old age. These survivors teach us new ways to relate to farm animals. We see their resilience, will to live, and love for those around them. And we're grateful to call them friends.

We'd like to introduce you to some of our animals that are among the most senior residents at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. Their lives are shining examples of what we all gain by extending compassion to those around us.

Norman!

Rescued Date: February 2017

Age: 5 1/2 years old

Lifespan in the meat industry: 12-15 months

Natural Lifespan: up to 20 years

Norman is a male dairy cow and considered a "throwaway" by the dairy industry. Because he can't produce milk, he was dumped at the auction house. He was destined to be sold and raised as a veal calf or just left to die. This is the fate of all male dairy cows. Norman was rescued and brought to HFS at just a day old. He was extremely sick and could barely stand on his own. He lived in the house with the founding family, was bottled fed and learned how to open doors with his tongue. He was eventually moved outside and now lives with his adopted baby brother, Kingston and 8 goat friends.

Eleanor!

Rescued Date: November 2015

Age: 7 years old

Lifespan in the meat industry: 6 months

Natural Lifespan: 15-20 years

Eleanor's breed is used in meat production. She was being raised for this. A worker at the "grow farm" fell in love with her and begged her boss to keep her. He agreed but only after Eleanor ran in a Halloween Pig race. Once she had Eleanor she looked long and hard to find her safe haven and she did here at HFS. Because Eleanor was bred to grow very big, very fast she can suffer chronic injuries, like arthritis. We keep a keen eye on her and address any issues she has quickly so that she can live her best life possible. We often find her napping in a cozy straw bed or snuggling alongside her besties, Rusty, Poppy and Clover.

Bob!

Rescued Date: May 2017

Age: 12 years old

Lifespan in the meat industry: 6 months

Natural Lifespan: 15-18 years

Bob is a kind and gentle soul who loves to spend his days napping in the sun with his goat family.

Bob, along with his buddy were raised as pets and had a very nice family. When his goat buddy died, he became very lonely. This is true of all farm animals that lose their friends. His owners wanting the best for him, found him a home here at HFS. And we are so thankful for that. Bob is such a gentleman who garners the attention of all the volunteers and those that come to visit. He loves pets and will even paw at you to continue.

Bob is a pygmy goat. This breed is not typically raised for meat in the US. But the goats that are will be gone by the time they are 6 months old. Just babies.

We are so thrilled that Bob is doing well at 12 years of age. He will continue to live out his precious life amongst family and friends being very loved!

Shorty!

Rescued Date: 2015

Age: 29

Shorty was used as a workhorse in the logging industry. Which is very evident in his gait. After many working years, injuries started to set in. Instead of retiring him, his owner shipped him to slaughter. Fortunately, he was saved from slaughter and brought to HFS and given a well-deserved retirement. Many horses are exploited and forced to work until their bodies give out.

Shorty is doing well at age 29. We watch over him closely and have started to feed him an extra bowl of pellets twice a day to keep his weight up.

We're thankful Shorty, a sweet gentle giant has the freedom to just be and bond with his family and the volunteers that fawn all over him.

Lurch & Sirius!

Rescued Date: October 2015

Ages: 9 & 7 years old

Lifespan in the meat industry: 5 months

Natural Lifespan: 10 years

Lurch was destined to be someone's Thanksgiving dinner and was for sale on Craigslist.

Wanting to save a turkey, we purchased him and brought him to HFS. It's interesting that when we picked him up, the owner said she felt relieved that we were not going to eat him because he was "so sweet". If you have ever spent any time around turkeys, you quickly realize how smart, funny and loving they can be.

Please don't save a turkey this way. The simplest way to save a turkey is by not putting one on your plate this holiday season. It's that simple. Or by adopting one at a farm sanctuary.

Lurch continues to be a wonderful ambassador for turkeys at our sanctuary. All those that meet him, fall in love with him. Come for a visit, meet Lurch and you'll see what we mean.

At 9 and 7 years old they are loving members of our flock. They both love to explore, receive attention from volunteers and visitors and enjoy a full life at HFS, while never being more than 6 feet apart. Lurch is a great father. They have a very strong bond. He always makes sure his son Sirius has plenty to eat and nice place to roost. They are so sweet, and we love their constant calming presence.

Fill your plate with these scrumptious plant-based options.
