Dear Saint James Family,

Yesterday morning a friend gave me the miniature statue of Saint James that you see pictured, which he brought back from the Cathedral of Santiago (Saint James) in Spain. He and others from the Diocese of St. Augustine went on this trip to bring back a full size statue which is being gifted to the Cathedral Basilica in St. Augustine. This statue will emphasize the historic link between Spain and our country going back to the Spanish Franciscan missionaries who first landed in St. Augustine in 1565. All of this is in preparation for the Feast of Saint James which is only a few weeks away.

As a community named after Saint James, we will be celebrating his feast with great festivity very soon and I would like to invite you to join us and to learn more about this great saint. I hope to see you on July 24, 2022. Learn more below.

WHY LEARN THE LORD'S PRAYER IN LATIN?

PREPARE TO PRAY WITH THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH THIS SUMMER!

We began practicing the Our Father in Latin during Sunday Mass beginning, June 26, 2022, something that is desired by Holy Mother Church, so that when the faithful come together from different countries, they can sing together at least some of the parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, at the minimum, the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed. You can read more about this in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (check out number 41), which is found in the beginning of every Roman Catholic altar missal and contains instructions for the Mass.

INCREASE PEACE WITH A PASTORAL VISIT

ANNUAL FAMILY BLESSINGS FROM A PRIEST

When Jesus sent leaders out into the villages he gave them authority to heal the sick and increase peace in homes (Luke 10). Priests still exercise this authority today for your benefit! According to the Book of Blessings, the annual visitation and blessing of families is one of the primary pastoral duties of priests and deacons. If it has been longer than a year since a clergyperson has been to your home and blessed your family, please contact Office@StJamesCC or 904-999-1423 to schedule a visit and receive your annual family blessing.

The mission and vision of Saint James will not come to fruition without the dedicated support of those who volunteer, give, and assist with their prayers at Mass. Devote yourself to the cause by registering as a parishioner, volunteering your gifts and abilities, and by your financial support. Thank you for you continued support of our mission of evangelization.

PAST HAPPENINGS AT THE COMMUNITY

SOLEMN MASS & SACRED BURNING

Thursday, June 23, 2022, a large number gathered to celebrate Mass for the Nativity of John the Baptist, followed by a solemn chanted procession outside of the church for a sacred burning and burial of unwanted blessed objects. The Saint James Community is grateful to Fr. Jason Trull and the community of Assumption Catholic Church for the use of their building and grounds for this festive event. Following the liturgy there was a second fire used for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows and picnicking on the grounds.

CORPUS CHRISTI MASS & PROCESSION

June 19, 2022 the community gave public witness to their faith and devotion toward the Blessed Sacrament in the millennia old joyful Corpus Christi Procession outside after Mass.

PENTECOST CONFIRMATIONS

June 5, 2022, five members completed their sacraments of initiation by being Confirmed. Congratulations to Cathy Morrison Messina, Robert Messina, Kieran Miller, Gianna Coots, and Andrew Coots and thank you to all of the family, friends, and guests who joined in this celebration.

FULL HOUSE FOR ASCENSION MASS & POTLUCK
On May 26, 2022, at 5:30 PM the community hosted one of the few Ascension Thursday Masses in Jacksonville on the traditional fortieth day after Easter to celebrate Christ’s rise into heaven, for a standing room only crowd. Following the Mass was a potluck filled with too much food, excited and noisy kids, and people connecting and getting to know one another. It was a beautiful and festive celebration of the solemnity.

Faithfully Yours,

Father Mayer
