Let me share with you one of the most powerful Jewish stories I have ever heard:

There was once a community campaign to build the most beautiful synagogue building in all of the land. The architects were instructed to spare no expense to design and build the stunning space under the advisement of the rabbi. On the day of the grand opening of the space, the entire community gathered in front of the massive building. The giant scissors cut the red ribbon on the front doors, the community was invited inside. But there, they found that it was dark. Could it be that somehow this perfect structure was built without illumination?

Just as the disappointed chatter and anxiety of the community rose, the rabbi clapped twice, and the community fell silent. "My people, the culpability for the lack of wall sconces falls squarely on my shoulders," he said. "I wanted to make sure that you always know that a building is not what makes a community. It is only the light that each of you bring with your presence that lights this place up! So, go home and return here bringing your lanterns, and let's bask in the glow of one another's light-- for that is what truly makes a community!" And, so they did, the lesson was learned.

When we began Keeping It Sacred in October 2019, we did so with this principle in mind-- that a building wasn't the defining feature of community. It never was. Rather, the strength of community is evident when many people bring, and share, their illuminating light.

And, all along and especially in the last two months, that is exactly what you have done. What a joy it is to regularly study sacred texts with folks in the US, Brazil, the UK, Mauritius, South Africa, Sweden, and Hong Kong, all at the same time. (Yes- the map above reflects our current KITS community membership). And our global community continues to grow every passing week.

We are not only geographically diverse, but also diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender, generation, sexual orientation, interests, and spiritual path.

Each of you, the members of the KITS community, have continued to bring your unique perspectives and have generously shared them with open and authentic hearts. And, we have each been enlightened through the experience of learning from one another's Torah-- each person's illuminating teachings-- from our diverse life experiences.

Our community is flourishing from the light that each person is bringing. When we celebrate the 8th night of Hanukkah with a full menorah early next month, we will celebrate as the flourishing global community that we are. Please register HERE and SAVE the DATE to join in the season of light!

Together, we are #keepingitsacred...

*We named this program for KITS member Melanie Grohman z"l (may her memory be for a blessing). She died unexpectedly this past summer at her home in Rockport, TX. She was very involved in our programs and in the midst of immersing herself in the study of Judaism and practices. We uplift her loving memory by naming this program in honor of her love of exploring Jewish life through the KITS community programming.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 95 members strong from 26 different states and 7 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.
