"How important is it to have clinical experience before becoming a research audiologist?" is one of the most common questions we receive from research-minded students. We also hear from clinicians who want to be involved in research, but don't know where to start.

In a collaboration with ASHA, Sarah Al-Salim, AuD, CCC-A from Boys Town National Research Hospital and Lisa Park, AuD, CCC-A from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill talked about how they transitioned from clinical to research audiology careers and how their clinical experiences supported their careers as research audiologists. This workshop presented by Matthew Winn, AuD, PhD, and Kelsey Anbuhl, PhD, is aimed at elevating awareness of good strategies for communicating science to other scientists, especially for conference podium presentations. The workshop is offered at no cost and is open to attendees at all career stages, from trainees to senior scientists.

RAISN Member Spotlight

Emily Spitzer, AuD, is a Research Assistant Professor at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on outcomes of cochlear implantation, including hearing preservation, electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS), and pediatrics. She recently lead the publication of an article, "Outcomes of cochlear implantation in adults over 85 years of age" in Cochlear Implants International. She & her co-author, Susan Waltzman, PhD, used retrospective data to look at outcomes of cochlear implantation in very elderly adults. They found that medical comorbidities were common, surgical complications were rare, and over 70% of patients wore their implants full-time. Speech perception scores for words, sentences in quiet, and sentences in noise measured 3 months post-operatively all improved significantly (~35 percentage points on average) from pre-operative levels and the improvement was maintained up to 3-4 years after implantation.
