Announces run for U.S. Senate in Virginia

Alexandria, VA - Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Gade, PhD., announced today that he is running for the US Senate seat for the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2020. Gade is challenging Mark Warner, who squeaked by with a victory back in 2014 only with a slim margin of +0.8%.
“I am not a career politician, nor am I interested in power or prestige at the expense of the American citizen. Instead, this is about honoring the sacred values that began and will sustain our Republic and about serving the people of the Commonwealth. Since I was seventeen, I have served the American people, and I look forward to serving Virginia in the Senate. I will fight for Virginia with the same oath, but on a new mission. I am running for the US Senate because our freedoms are still worth fighting for.”
Dr. Daniel Gade is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, professor, and public policy leader. During more than 20 years of military service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. Daniel graduated from West Point in 1997 and served in multiple locations in the United States and Korea.
“In 2004, my unit deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom where I led a unit of 150 soldiers on many combat missions. On January 10, 2005, I was wounded in combat for the second time. I was leading a patrol outside of Ramadi, Iraq as a company commander. Suddenly, our Humvee was struck by a roadside bomb. I woke up in a ditch, critically injured. For the next three months, through more than 40 surgeries, I fought for my life. But my faith in God, our great country, and my family never wavered.”
“My new, serious disability was life changing, but I decided to thrive. A year to the day after my injuries, I started my Master of Public Administration, and later went on to earn a PhD in public administration and policy. I have since served in two Presidential administrations, working on veteran and military health care and disability policy. I have also served on several national-level policy councils, including the National Council on Disability and the VA Advisory Committee on Disability Compensation.”
Gade believes his campaign begins a new chapter in a fight that is just as important as his combat service.
“The oath of military service members is the same oath that US Senators take when being sworn in. The oath contains the word ‘I’ six times. That word imposes an individual obligation on the person taking the oath. It’s not a group obligation, it is ‘I’ personally will do this - to support and defend the constitution, without any other motivation. It’s an individual oath to support a document and principles of that document. It puts down a set of limitations on government. Our rights do not come from government, our rights are protected by government.”
Daniel resides in Alexandria with his wife of 20 years, Wendy, and their three children. For fun, Daniel does hard things: he mountain bikes, road bikes and enjoys CrossFit. In 2010, he competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, where he won the paratriathlon category. A week later, he completed Ironman Arizona, pedaling the 112 miles with only one leg.
