A change is as good as a rest - Anon

I'm back! Yes I'm back in Colorado and refreshed and ready to go! I've now been home for two weeks, and the time has flown. My summer was an adventure. I traveled from Scotland to the South of England to the South of France with my trusty flowery backpack I've had since I was 18. It was the last outing for that bag - immediately visible on carousels and falling apart, it's taken me as far as it can. I climbed mountains, sat on the beach, visited vineyards, swam in pools, paddled in the Scottish sea and strolled through English fields. It was a wonderful reminder of where I come from.

I also (finally) caught COVID and sweltered in my brother's house in England during a heatwave, and caught a vomiting bug from a baby in Provence - 3 days before flying home. I saw family and friends, met new children and old pets. I flew out from England as the country mourned its Queen and managed to avoid a French air traffic controller strike. I did calls at 11pm and worked in cars. It was great to be back in the Old Country, and now it's great to be back home in my own bed.

It has also been a busy couple of weeks Stateside. On Wednesday it was my birthday and as of today, I am officially a US citizen! It's been a journey - I've been on various kinds of visa/green cards since 2015 and now I have a naturalization certificate! I can do all sorts of things, like vote, register as a Women-Owned Business and run for office! If you were born here, you should look up the Oath of Allegiance sometime, it's big stuff. Anyway, on that positive note, I think this fall's going to be a good one!

Networking!

What are you going to this fall?

Now that I'm back, I'm planning to go to as many events as I can. Which ones are your favorites to attend? I like going to events that involve a talk or focal point, as well as a networking component so that I can meet people. Here are some of the Colorado groups I'm planning to check out in the next couple of months.

  • Ad Club Colorado

  • Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce

  • TARRA

  • Denver Area B2B Networking Group

  • Women in Sustainability

Let me know if you're involved in any of these or if there are any great ones I've missed!

Business strategy

Don't be forced into a niche!

As part of the social whirlwind I plan to be this fall I went to a networking event recently where they talked about niching down. Now, the idea of niching is something that put my hackles up. I understand the need to specialize and make it easy for people to understand what you do and what you're expert in, but I don't like being put in a box and I certainly don't want to do the same thing for the rest of my life. Here's my alternative approach.

Canvas Rebel coverage

Before the summer I was invited to be interviewed about me and what I was doing. I focused on The Alkimie Collective because I believe that what we're doing as a group matters. Read it to find out why!

How to know if it's time for a rebrand

You may think that rebranding is for really big businesses, but everyone can benefit from a refresh from time to time if things have changed. This article from Vistaprint is clearly written to encourage you to use them for new business cards, but nevertheless the same principle applies to your overall brand, and maybe brand strategy. Is it time for you yet?

About me

This month's color is pink. I bought these shoes on a gray, drizzly day in Glasgow, Scotland. I then had to wear them on all my flights because they were the heaviest things in my luggage. I still had to wear them traveling when I was recovering both from COVID and my stomach bug and I was extremely weak. A heavy rucksack, carry-on luggage and Dr. Martens is not the easiest combination when you're not feeling good.

Nevertheless, they bring me so much joy.

See you next time.
