February 2022 edition of ONtarget...

CHAIRMAN'S SUMMARY

Well, we are off to a flying start with a little bit of a dampener from the rise of Omicron. We are still operational and focusing on safety while providing the services we can to the veteran community. The big news is we have a new Connections Coordinator. And we are in the final stages of launching our own coffee brand. The Employment landscape is also filled with opportunities. This month we will hold our first formal Veterans Business Alliance networking meeting at Home Base. We have just signed off on the development of an Uber-like rating system for our service providers based on our smartphone app. We've made some enhancements to our Hut Booking System to make it simpler and safer for all, including ourselves as usage numbers are getting big.

NEW CONNECTIONS COORDINATOR

We would like to introduce our new Connections Coordinator. Josh Miller has joined us to bring together the many and varied activities and groups forming in support of The Oasis and especially at Home Base. We've had some difficulty getting the right person for this very important job, but we have found a veteran with great skills to help us grow the Connections Program.

Welcome to:

Josh Miller

VETERANS BUSINESS ALLIANCE

(VBA)

The VBA will get a kick start this month with its first networking meeting at Home Base.

If you'd like to know more about VBA and possibly be invited to join the VBA, please see members here. Our members will bring prospective veteran-smart employers to up to two VBA Networking events for a look-see. If you are genuine, we'd love to have you on board.

Job Vacancies

We've had some great wins from our Job Vacancies Board - fitting veterans into businesses. However we've had a few less-than-genuine employers just using us as another place to advertise. Some of them are not really interested in veterans at all. We are onto them.

We will soon be shifting the Job Vacancies Board to VBA Member priority.

'REAL' GRANT WRITING SUPPORT

How would you like help to get a grant for your good cause?

Members of the serving and ex-serving veteran community are involved in many activities across Townsville and often in leadership positions. Most of activities they are involved in need money to operate. Groups that have as members both veterans and members of Townsville's wider community are especially valuable for supporting the integration of the members of the veteran community into Townsville.

We learnt a lot from The Oasis Grant Programs we ran over the last three years and we recognise the grants we offered were limited by the amount of money available and that there is much more funding to be gained if only groups could get the grant writing right.

There are a few places around town that can teach you how to write a grant and set you on your way. There are also people and businesses that can help write the grant for you, at a cost.

WE WILL BE RUNNING A GRANT WRITING SUPPORT PROGRAM

THAT WILL SIT WITH YOU TO WRITE THE GRANT YOU NEED

OR THAT WE HELP YOU IDENTIFY

TO MEET YOUR NEEDS - FOR FREE.

Are you a bit overwhelmed by the grant writing process, or even had a go but been unsuccessful?

The first session will be on in March. Watch the What's On page for details.

SMARTPHONE APP DEVELOPMENT

The Oasis App has some significant downloads and is getting new features thanks to a grant from the Morris Family Foundation - The Ville Casino and Resort.

We are adding a feature that will help identify which businesses we refer veterans to are the best. The app will allow veterans to rate the outcome of their appointment and their experience. A simple 1 to 5-star rating. Coming soon. Good to order coffee now.
